C Coupe French car of the year

France Votes Mercedes-Benz Sports Coupe “Most Beautiful Car of the Year”

Stuttgart, 01/24/2002 - During the International Automobile Festival, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sports coupe was voted “Most Beautiful Car of the Year” by about 250,000 French TV viewers. This is the first time since the competition was established in France that Mercedes-Benz has won the award. The sports coupe received almost 35 percent of the votes cast, putting it ahead of the Peugeot 206 CC, the Mini Cooper and the Renault Avantime.

Question

Is this really an honor? Have you seen some of the cars that the French automotive industry has produced over the years?

What has this to do with the fact that they voted the Coupe top award?
Those "ugly" cars have never made it to the top!

What was that Black Adder quote...

Something like "what did the French ever contribute to civilization besides eating frogs and urinating in public?"

At least some of the personal attacks have stopped!

To comment on the award: It does not surprise me to see that, as I do believe that the coupe is a nice looking car! Nice to hear that it's getting the recognition that it deserves!

Hmmm...

The Germans beating the French, and the French rewarding them for doing it. Why does that sound so familiar?

C230 C-Coupe
Those Citreon 2CVs can be assembled with a multi purpose wrench. In WW2 they dumped them from planes in boxes.

They have a great re-sell value in the UK as a niche car.

The French don't make beutifull cars but have great taste.

I would place the Coupe second behind the TT.

French car of the year

I would say that, considering the listed competition for the C Coupe, its victory was entirely predictable.

The French have produced some rather nice-looking cars over the years, some with Italian assistance:
- various pre-war Talbots & Talbot Lagos
- many Bugattis
- most pre-WW1 Renaults
- Peugeot 402 Darl' Mat Spécial Sport
- Alpine Renault A110 Berlinette Tour de France
- Citroën DS 21 Chapron Cabriolet
- Citroën CX
- Peugeot 404 Coupé and Cabriolet
- Peugeot 504 Coupé and Cabriolet
- Peugeot 306 Cabriolet
- Peugeot 406 Coupé

There are more...

The French simply mistook the speedy C Coupe as a new invasion and rapidly surrendered before the pollsters had a chance to explain to them that it was only an opinion survey.
