Audio unit upgrade

Audio unit upgrade
hi I live in Australia and bought the classic 2004 c180 komp w203, it came with just a cd player and its just too basic. i would like to upgrade it or put a new unit, but my worry is, the present sound quality is too good and I wanna keep the quality as is or increase it. is it the unit or the speakers contributing to this nice music?. what if I change the unit and loose the quality?. Is there a way to just upgrade the unit?

I think a visit to a good quality auto stereo shop would prove very helpful.

Is your car pre or post facelift? You are right at the changeover period. Do you have an Audio 10? that looks like this? If so it was one of the better sounding head units fitted standard but lacks connectivity. Do you have the 6 CD changer in the glovebox? (non mp3 capable)
To do a meaningful upgrade I recommend to look at one of the Pioneer AVIC double DIN range of units & Polk purpose made speakers that don't require you to cut up the car.
If you want a big time upgrade then it's separate - non class D, amps. JL Audio subs etc. The sky is the limit & a waste of money in a car with crap acoustics IMHO.
Reading between the lines I think you just want reasonable sound - iPod connectivity & mp3 capability maybe? Let us know.

Yes it looks exactly like in the image and yes there is a cd stacker in the glove box, but i thought the stacker box is only for cd storage, cause it had no connections or anything( I was able to easily pull it off). the present unit cannot even fast forward a song. Just looking for something that has cd,mp3, ipod, thats all. Can't we keep the speakers and change the unit, is there a matching unit in market?, so we don't have to rip the car up and put it back.

There is a 6 CD stacker that goes in the glovebox with those storage boxes that mates with the Audio 10 - I have one - it was an option.
I would go with a Pioneer AVIC & keep the speakers - they are not bad.
Sorry - this is the only pic I can find. There are a whole range of AVIC F series available with a bezel to fit your Merc. Takes up the the whole double DIN space without cutting etc.
