for Mercs that have the 'Keyless Go' feature [w203 doesnt have it] they have a special card in which they leave it in their pocket/wallet, and when you get close to the doors, they automatically unlock and start when you hit the engine start button.
to get a better understanding of what im talking about, look at this Top Gear episode and go directly to 1:55 into the video. That should explain everything.

Does anyone know if our models have the keyless entry? My friend has a CL600 and there is this credit card type of thing (thin plastic electronic). When it's in his pocket or on him he comes to the car and presses (or puts his finger over it) that sensor type of thing and it unlocks. Then same thing when he gets out of the car. He just presses that sensor type of thing. I don't know if our cars support that. It would be a nice feature to have.
I think on ours it's the sensor for the signal and on higher models like the CL, S, E, CLS it's also for the keyless entry.

As JTurkel said, that's the IR receiver for the summer open feature. Your car doesn't have it? I thought they all did. Older ones have it on both front doors and newer cars have it only on the driver door.

a quarter mile at a time
couple of errors here.
The IR reciever on the door (pictured) is used to both unlock and lock the doors and also can be used to roll down/up the windows.
Older keyless go cars use the cards, but all the new keyless go cars use a normal looking smart key. Keyless go cars have a button that must be depressed to unlock the doors.
