engine seized, i messed up, please help
They are going to have to get the ECU with that new engine because the ECU & engine are VIN matched.
This can be overcome with adaption but it's far from just plug & play but not insurmountable.
Why would a used engine not work with the same ECU? The ECU has no clue what VIN is etched on the engine. I have heard that a used ECU will not work with the car, since the car has to be VIN matched to the ECU, yet the ECU should work with any engine (as long as it has the same specs).
my shop guy said he found one with 19K on it but it cost 3700$
he said the adjuster seemed reasonable.
I havent gotten a call from the adjuster at all.
the shop said that for the most part, there will be new parts purchased, but basically from the used engine they will use the block.
The only parts swapped from the blown engine to the used engine was the electronics (MAF, O2 sensors, plugs, ...), starter, alternator, and exhaust manifold. The used engine came with the full intake (SC, TB, ...), water pump, vacuum pump, and even the wire harness.

. It sure is not what connecting rod is supposed to look like, but it makes an interesting paperweight now.

anyways, heres an up date
i have a engine being sent over from california, from a 2005 c320 that had 39K miles on it. Its supposedly was hit on rear side, bent frame, no front end dammage. its been sitting at the salvage yard for 2 yrs .
the insurance set its max payment , around 6 grand . If i wanted to buy a new engine id have to pay the difference.
i can post a list of the items my repair shop is requiring.
I personally wouldn't want an engine that had been sitting idle for 2 years. That's just me.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

the adjuster came up withthe estimate for engine etc and labor for 6100 bucks and presented that to the insurance agent.
they sent that to the shop who mostly agreeed with the cost.
they just needed my autrhorization to go forth with the repair.
the adjuster had found an engine locally, but the shop does not use that salvage yard or werent comfortable with them, and they found one in california, from partsdept.com
they ordered that one
what im wondering, the one that was found b y the adjuster was noted to be 2800 bucks.
i dont know the cost of the california one. i couldnt get that info because my shop had made the purchase and i wasnt privvy to that info.
interestly , they went ahead with the purchase before i approved authroization for the work to be done.
see where im getting
the most i could get from the partsdept was the vin number

or if anyone wants parts, i canhook u all up.

when i call the shop tomorrow and ask if the "new" engine has arrived, and ask for my old one, im sure they will be like "why the heck do u want it"
i just need to be prepared so i dont make a fool out of myself, thanks

so bring a few friends along for the ride and then buy them a bear. and i just had a thought make sure the shop doesn't take the coil packs and other things off the engine. i also assume the new engine came with air filter housing, ecu ... make sure they don't try to keep that stuff. hope your repair goes well keep us posted.

if they totaled the car, id get like 15K, wtf can i buy with that. my car was pretty much pristine minus this incident.
