Door check is a "wear and tear" item!? Dealer is crazy.

My drivers door makes clicking noises when opened / closed. It also swings freely instead of stopping half way like it is designed. The bad part is called the "door check" this is the arm in the center of the door.

The car is at the dealer and they expect me to believe that it is a wear and tear item. Only $380 to replace! It's a ~$50 part online, which takes 40 minutes to replace.

They also refuse to replace my cup holder because the chrome is chipping off - apparently not covered under the CPO warranty. At least this I can understand.

Has anyone else been given this same line of BS about a door check?

...a panty dropper...
This is the first time I have heard about that part of the door going bad. Hmmm. Maybe some of the OGs can shed some light on it but I dont understand why they are charging you so much for that one small part. Stealership at its finest!!!

BS do it yourself. My cupholder was replaced because of the chrome flaking, but my car was under the original warranty - not CPO.

Using their logic everything is a wear and tear item. I've never heard of one failing.

My passenger side door has started clicking. I was going to ask my SA about it. I will go in in about another week or two, so I will let you know what my guy says. Fingers crossed!

You'll be fine- you still have the original warranty. They just don't want to fix this part under CPO, so their BS reasoning is that it's a wear and tear item.

Not so fast. Drew has the original warranty, but he also has one of the crappiest dealers I have ever heard of (and believe me, I've heard some awful tales). Avoid that dealer if you can.

Haha! Thanks Matt, but I'm back in St. Augustine, which means that I can go to the GOOD dealership: Brumos in Jacksonville. The SA we go to here has been my dad's SA sonce 1986. They won't screw me like Duval.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
I just replaced my door check less than a month ago.
I suppose no one has heard of it, because it wasn't something I ended up posting about...
small annoyance, not worth posting, well if i was being quoted labor like yours, I would post.

Somehow the metal had actually cracked at the mounting point.
It was grinding into the body, slipping side to side, and scratching the paint.
It's just the kind of thing that comes back to bite you down the road, corrosion etc.
And it was popping etc.
FYI- Part number on the coupe (not sure if they're the same on sedan)
are A2037200316 Door stop
N000000000944 Bolt for door stop M6x20 $.75

So as stated, it was about 50 bucks for the part.
It took, oh maybe 1/2 hour to replace.
You have to fish it in and out, and it's like one of those puzzles.
I think I had to open the new one a notch to get to feed through, and you have to
pull it this way, then that kinda thing through the door panel....I think I had to
pull the door speaker too to reach it.
Not a big deal, but it does take a bit of doing to fish it through, but it will go.

I also ended up ordering new screws, the old ones didn't seem to tighten down enough, and I also ended up breaking one, and then having to use to easyout to get the screw out.
Works great now. So I would recommend new screws.

See my sig, thats my driveway, that probably how I broke it, must've let the door go by accident.

I'd highly recommend just buying the part, and DIY'ing.
There's a pdf for taking the panel off I posted in a thead
by username Gaeix about removing the door panel . Or is it Geaix?
Something like that.

FYI- the drink holder comes out easily....remove the rubber piece in the bottom, it just pries out.
Then it unclips back to front.

When it gets sticky, doesn't want to open etc.
I found that it just get gunked up.
Soak it in hot water for a few miinutes, let it dry, and just like new, pop it back in.
Just did this a day or so ago...was getting hard to open, and wouldn't latch.
Like new again.

I bought a new one for that reason, turned out the old was OK after soaking it, sold it to a forum member!

That sounds like a major PITA!

As for my AMAZING SA... I just took my dad's S550 in for service, and my SA gave me a LOANER. I didn't request one (I asked for a ride to school), but he found one for me anyway. And in case this seems less than amazing, I'm 19!!!

Wow. Every time my car goes in I can't drive a loaner. Some crap about it costing extra $$ because they use enterprise cars and I'm under 25.

That is BS. I have seen engine mounts being replaced under warranty. If anything the engine mounts will be wear and tear.

Go to a better dealer. I am 23 and I have always gotten a loaner (lowest model car for a loaner is a C300). If you complain (I saw a leady say I brought in a S550 and you guys are giving me a C300 and she got a GLK 350) you might get a loaner.

Now they're asking Mercedes if they will goodwill the repair. So maybe the dealer isn't the bad guy here. This kind of thing really discourages me from buying another Mercedes. What good is the CPO warranty if it doesn't cover the doors falling off?

hi - it was a great read on how you replace the door's metal bar. I too had replaced that particular part. But instead of buying a new metal bar....i went to a scrapyard and took that metal bar from another mercedes car. It seems this metal bar is used in several different models of mercedes cars.

The most diffcult part was to remove the door panel. There are several clips whcih attched the door panel to the door.

I didn't know you could use hot water to soak the metal bar.

But again, thanks for a good replacement reading material.

bdgdl08- This isn't directly to you. There is nothing to be ashamed of if your dad pays for your stuff. What's to be ashamed is when your dad grows old and can't work and you don't pay for him.

Wise words, Karo. But Kris did direct a (seemingly snide) comment at Drew about it. Which is absolutely NONE of his business, I might add. From what I know, Drew's a good guy and if my kid (imaginary, no kids here) were like him (in college, head screwed on right, etc) I'd be paying for stuff and helping him, too. My kid would know that past tense of "pay" is "paid", though, not "payed". Sorry Drew, I just can't resist picking at you. Seriously.. you're a good guy (don't want to use "kid" or patronize you). Parents help cause they want to sometimes.

I've been on this forum for a while and Drew has always been a cool guy. I wasn't trying to target you Drew. My comment was just in general. Nothing to be ashamed if your parents pay for stuff. But if you are like a guy I know that has a bachelors degree and you are home all day playing video games and you mom is supporting you then that's something to be ashamed

Lol doesn't sound like it.. if hes paying 50% still.. Try owning the car monthly with your pocketbook at that age.. also try paying the full covered insurance. I'm not hating I'm just saying. I paid for my car in cash at 19 =P ( Talk about making it rain at the dealer )

( Paying for mods is cheap when you don't have a monthly payment or insurance to worry about. )

But i guess a lot of people had there stuff givin to them.. sucks for the people that actually have to work 10 hours a day for it.
