2007 C280 4Matic
Key FOB

Just picked up an '07 C280 4Matic for the wife. Unfortunately the car only came with one key fob. Any one know what the part number is for the key fob and what the cost is? Also does it need to be programmed by a dealership.

Thanks.

The dealer has to order from the MB security center for your VIN. Prices seem to vary from 200 to $325 with a few robbers even more expensive.

I got another one for roughly $200, then the price of programming. I also have a 2007 c280 4matic.

This price of programming is a good old dealer trick & BS. They get the key programmed from Benz Security. They can't program it.

the programming consist of the dealer hooking it up to the star and removing unused/lost keys for security. This is a MBUSA requirement to the dealers. Also changing a black key to a chrome key is not an easy task unless you have to experience with electronics and soldering.

So that's what it is. I saw Key Programming in STAR and was wondering if it can be programmed.

I thought you plug the new key in the ignition and it automatically programs is for you but I guess I was wrong. So it's just for clearing it huh?

There was a DIY here on the forum. It included soldering but it seemed not to complex.

The key does automatically program the other programming is needed to remove lost/stolen/unused keys that are no longer in your possession to keep the car from being stolen. I tried to do the key swap but my soldering iron was too big I tried to cut the leads with a razor but I bent a few pins each time went through a few keys before I gave up.

Do the guts of the old key fit properly in the new one? Dont both shells have a slightly different shape?

use the new shell from the new key...just take the chip from the old key then put that to the new shell...of course soldering is involved.

Ah...that makes sense.

For a second I thought we could open up the new and old keys and just replace everything from the inside of the old shell into the new one...got me excited for a moment...

Yea, and my car shouldn't come back with damage *EVERY* time it goes in for warranty work (scratches, or a hole in the leather, broken clips, etc). But it'll never happen.

I agree, but service makes no money on keys since it's a part and the techs wont touch anything unless they are paid because they work on flag time.
