That's correct, steering wheel controls are connected with Pioneer CA-R-PI.131 on the prefacelift cars. If you want DVD you need to go with at least the Pioneer X910BT.

I would probably steer away from the Pioneer units based on the X710BT performance. Its a little too slow and has a few too many bugs occasionally, but we got it for a good price. Theres pretty good support online, maybe with some of the hacks available it works better.

I finally get to install my new toys tomorrow night! The 131 isn't here yet but I will just open everything back up and put it in once it arrives.

I will take pics during the install for everyone.

So far, from what I've been researching, this is only for the Harmon & Kardon speaker system.

only the hk system has an amp outside the h/u itself...just added new boston components and a 225 rms alpine amp to power them...cost me about 300 for install and looking to get factory speakers to replace the ones in the rear doors (believe it or not factory benz speakers in the w203 non h/k sound pretty good)

If you look at the speakers, it should say "Harmon & Kardon" on it. So if you use your eyes to look directly at the speaker, you can see the 3" logo on it hahah.

Best Buy didn't tell me that a double din wouldn't fit in my w203 ('05 C230), they installed mine. But Crutchfields did. Back in 1982, they sold me speakers that were supposed to fit in my old BMW 230i - but there was NO WAY they would fit. I know they do good stuff for some people, but I've had enough of them.

You guys with Pioneer HUs - what antenna adapter did you use?

I just had an AVIC X940bt installed in my '05 C230. It's fine but when listening to FM there are random pops, snaps, or static (it seems like only when I'm driving). It doesn't happen when listening to a CD or when listening to AM. On a Pioneer forum started frequenting, a poster suggested it could be an incompatibility between the antenna adapter and the antenna. Anybody have any ideas?

A guy on the Pioneer forum gave me this tip about static:

i would check to make sure that the antenna amp is getting powered up then,

there is also the metra 40-eu55 which does have the same plugs but has its own signal amp, also make sur ethat your car does not have dual antennas like a lot of new German cars do in which case the 40 eu56 might work better.
BTW - the Pioneer forum is at: http://avic411.com/

Pioneer z130bt
Scosche MZ2347B dash kit
VW03B Radio Wiring Harness
VWA4B Antenna Adapter
Metra Axxess ASWC steering wheel control

Notes:
  • Dash kit does not provide rear supports. I taped cardboard inserts at the bottom sides of the cavity to support the rear of the head unit. (see pic below)
  • Radio harness does not provide 12v switched ... tapped into the cigarette lighter harness yellow/black wire.
  • This car has two antenna cables. The one with the BLACK connector is for normal RF radio, and is the one to connect your adapter to. The cable with the YELLOW connector is called "ZF intermediate frequencies", which I believe is wideband for the stock radio (lower frequency requires longer antenna length). You do not need to use the ZF/yellow cable at all. Just remember to connect your head unit's remote antenna/amp turnon lead to the BLUE wire on your harness, as the car has its own antenna amplifier that needs to be turned on! Do not use the amplifier on the adapter.
  • The head unit also has illumination, speed and reverse signal wires. I tapped into the cig lighter harness blue/gray wire for illumination. This wire gets 12v signal at night, so will turn your maps into "night mode" display and otherwise dim the display. The night mode maps with 3D view make it look like an airplane cockpit
  • ASWC allowed me to program all six buttons on the steering wheel (Fwd/Rev seek, Phone On/Off hook, Vol Up/Down)
  • I have not yet connected speed or reverse. I don't have a backup camera and GPS will works pretty well without these signals, so no rush here.
  • USB/iPod cable in the glovebox. I removed the CD changer and tucked the stock cables back into the dash.
  • GPS antenna is in the dash tucked into a cavity on the right side of the upper center vents. (see pic below)
  • Phone mic is mounted on the left side of the rear view mirror mount. So far people tell me I sound fine.
Two weeks and I'm loving it! but the stock speakers now sound shrill at louder volumes ... time to start searching for better speakers and a sub :|
