ESP Lateral sensor failure

Hey all.

New to the forum here but not new to forums in general. I’m a mechanical & electrical engineer & a bike fanatic. I’m on several bike forums & am pretty handy with bike mechanicals. Have little real experience with car systems (save for basic servicing) & am only now beginning to realise that they are a lot more complex in operation than bike systems (especially with ancillary engine & active safety systems).

My Dad’s C200 Kompressor year 2001 with 100k miles has an ESP lateral sensor fault which I need to fix. I have a fault diagnostic printout (see below) & also the dash computer is registering the ESP sensor malfunction. I want to do this on the cheap & am prepared to buy a 2nd hand sensor & fit it myself if there is no other programming/re mapping required to the ECU that a Mercedes garage would HAVE to do.

Can some point me in the right direction & tell me when the ESP sensors is located? Is it a pretty straight forward job to do? I have access to a full garage with car ramp/lift & all the tools too.

Cheers for any & all help,

Ken

I'm not sure where the sensors are located, but a majority of the system is contained in a black box above the LH headlight. I'm not sure, but I'd assume you would need STAR to make everything work. Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

I believe the lateral sensor is the yaw sensor. It located in the rear trunk. The floor area near the rear seats lift up and you can see it. Its pretty much a plug and play swap out once you have the sensor.

There pics if do a search.

Thanks guys!

Looked under that panel in the boot & found 2 sensors. One was a about the size of a matchbox with the mount mounded as part of the sensor & the other was about an inch cubed (30mm cubed) mounted to a brass plate with a directional arrow on the plate (I think this is the LAS sensor).
Looks like this

I disconnected both & sprayed WD40 on all terminals (they looked fine) & reconnected. Went for a test drive & the ESP fault warning came on within a minute. If the sensor was good (which I dont think it is) would it knock out the fault straight away or would I need a dealer computer to do it?

You need to cancel the code with an OBDII scanner & see if it comes back. Yaw sensor failure is pretty common on early cars.
