What's a good price?

I'm looking at 2006 & 2007 C280s and C350s with 4Matic. I can get an 07 350 with 53k for just over 21 grand. That is about what I would pay for a C280 with less miles, power, and standard features. Is this good price for the milage? I found it on Carmax.com; has anyone had a buying experience through them? What was good, what was bad?

In February of 09 I got a 2006 C350 with 21k miles for 20k + Tax and License. It's not 4-matic (just something to compare)

the 21 grand is that the asking price or is that how much you got it down to?

They list the price as...

Carmax has what they call a no-haggle price. The price on the sticker is what you pay. Period. It includes a $149 dealership documentation fee and that's it. I would have to pay a $300 transfer fee to get the car shipped from California as well as tax and license. According to Carmax, out the door the cost would be $20,748 plus the $300 for transport. I have searched a few car buying forums and the consensus is that they will not budge on the price because that is what sells their dealership.

I live about 22 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah. I wish it was somewhere warmer without snow. That way I could have more fun with RWD

Unhappy

Given the poor economy, I may have to pass on a W203 until used car prices come down again. I cannot find a C280 or C350 with the desired accessories for under 20k. I guess if I want luxury with style that stands out from the status quo BMW, I'll have to settle for a Saab 9-3 V6.

As much as I like my w203, it's just as common as a status quo BMW. Which means nothing to me, my benz still rocks.

Well, I don't see any other appealing options. I would buy a BMW but here, a 3 series still goes for 21k with 70,000 miles and minimal options...outrageous! Same with Infiniti and Subaru. An 06 or 07 Saab that is fully loaded with 30k on the clock is commonly listed around $15,000.

And as far as a Mercedes being status quo, I'm inclined to disagree because EVERYONE has a BMW. I have a higher respect for Benz owners. Yes, it's a status symbol like the Bimmer but it goes beyond the surface IMO. It has character, distinctive, elegant, and quietly dignified. It says something about the owner as opposed to buying a BMW for the sake of owning a BMW.

And yes it does have to be 4Matic. I realize the Saab is FWD but I trust that over RWD in the snow and ice even with winter tires. I've had less than pleasant encounters with my brothers 330i.

yeah i would wait and just find the car and price you feel comfortable with. The longer you wait, the cheaper the price on these cars.

As a former Audi owner, I would definitely recommend the A4 over a Saab if you need AWD. I really loved Quattro!

Audi does make a nice car but I would never own one out of warranty. I used to work for one of their dealerships and I know they are very expensive to maintain plus I have heard horror story after horror story about the timing belt snaping 15 to 20k miles before the recommened service period. That is why I've been looking at cars that have chain driven engines only. If I knew I could depend on it and it wasn't so finicky, I woulnt hesitate to buy the A4. I think the pre facelifted B6 A4 was simply stunning.

I went to drive an Audi A4 today and as soon as I opened the door I could tell this was not the car for me. I interior materials are very nice and feel expensive but the hardware is awful. Interior door release was loose and the glove-box door wouldn't open all the way. I think the driver interior door panel was starting to loosen as well. I will not be buying and Audi...ever! I think Audi owners drive the hell out of their cars.

I almost got the 09 A4 prestige w/ quattro but the dealership wouldnt take 35k cash on the deal. They actually had the nerve to limit me to a personal check of 5k. I responded by saying "no thank you", walked across the street to the Mercedes dealership and picked up a new W204 for 37k cash.
