Help

My car has been showing this warning message since I cam back to the cold Cleveland weather. When I was in Florida it showed up only on the coldest days. The seat will not work until i drive the car for a significant time. Does anyone know what this means?

I have not seen it in the manual, even the dealership can't figure it out. Also the drivers seat controls work backwards.

It sounds to me as if you have some seat switching or limit switch problems. Is there been any water ingress around the seat area. I think the system is being told that the back seat swab has not locked in the correct position.

I would try extending the seat swab to the limit of its travel in both directions to see if it resets.

I don't think any water has gotten in. It is strange that it only happens in cold weather though.

I've read about that warning in a manual or document somewhere...

There is/was supposed to be a warning generated when you move your seat on its tracks but don't lock it into place. There is also a steering lock error if you move your steering wheel and do not push the lever back in to lock it. I assumed these warnings were only for vehicles with manually operated steering wheel / seat adjustments. I'm also thinking that they eliminated the sensors for this at some point, because in my 05 if I drive around without the steering wheel locked, I get no warning.

Yea, both the steering and seat are powered.

Likely a microswitch or limiter switch that sticks when cold. Our older cars had all that trickle down stuff from the then S Class that got deleted later. My car even has heated mirrors & headlamp washers in South Africa - I ask you!!!

I would get some electrical spray & spray everything that has a wire going to it under the seat. Do both front seats stick or only the driver's? Seems to be the rake adjustment motor circuit that is out of whack.

Hey my car has a heated driver side mirror (think passenger side is dead but maybe cost cutting?) and heated windshield washers.

And 1 brake pad sensor Yours is an early facelift car - more seemed to be removed as time went by. We really don't need heated mirrors, headlamp and screen washers in SA. They make real sense in much of the US. I might use my rear screen demister twice a year.

Do you know if both mirrors are supposed to be heated in a USDM 2005? I wish I knew if the element was dead or if it was just deleted. Either way, my passenger side doesn't heat.

Matt - pop the mirror cover off. The mirror heater mini spades & wiring is very obvious once off. I have no idea what they have done on US cars.

Yes. Both are supposed to be heated (when the temperature is under ____). My passenger side heated mirror stopped working also. Mirror replaced under warranty - fixed the problem. I think the contacts / leads were corroded.

They are supposed to come on with the rear screen demister.

That might be how they work in SA, but in the USA this is not true. The car activates and de-activates them based on outside temp and the driver has no control over it.

I take such pride in saying this because it is so rare that I get to correct you

You are incorrect Glyn.
Maybe its different in the US vs ROW? I can tell you for sure that they come on below a certain temp which is in the manual.

Edit: Nooo! LILBENZ beat me to it.

ACR you were savoring the moment.

Just giving you a hard time, Glyn. It's interesting that Benz would program things that differently in USA vs ROW,

No - in ROW they come on when you switch on the rear demister. Same in W204 including American models the 204 forum informs me. See recent post by RLE. He claims his previous US C320 (W203) also switched in same as ROW with rear demister.

This of course might be something that changed in later production. It's not reflected as a facelift change though.

Hey! - I don't mind being wrong for a specific market - I **** you off & learn at the same time That's what I call bang for the buck

Personally I would rather be able to turn them on & off.

Some perverse people think I'm always correct. I'm not! - I try desparately to be - typical Virgo - but I'm human & make mistakes. If I realise the mistake I will always try & correct it - I suffer no saving of face issues. If I've been a BF I will be the first to admit it. See Origins of M271 thread LOL.

Mnr. Marais - I wondered about your origins. Yeah - I lived in Dallas for many years & then Bay Area SFO - Marin County - then Sydney Aus & all over Asia & finally home.

Hope we can help you from Cape Town with your seat.

They must have a bunch of engineers running around in the factory playing duck duck goose with the cars. All of these tiny differences in programming between random models drives me crazy. The last time this came up it was about the "low coolant level" warning, which apparently comes up on certain US models when the wiper fluid is low! On others you get the proper wiper fluid warning...
