iPhone 3G, what's the deal???

I've been waiting for months for an MHI cradle or some other certified means of integrating an iPhone 3g in my 2005 C230. I had the older bluetooth puck and sold it and went back to using my MB v600. It's showing its age and was wondering what news anyone has as far as what MB will offer. I've read about the Universal Media Interface, but that probably will only work with 2008+ cars. It took MBUSA and Auto Wireless a long time to even release the cradle for the first generation iPhone. Thanks, but that's dated and well behind the curve...

So, if anyone has any credible information or ETA on a workable OEM solution, I would be glad to hear. I'm not going to drop another $400+ on a bluetooth puck unless it's been certified for use with the iPhone. I do have the iPod integration kit and I was planning on using it with the adapter piece so it would charge....

Anyway, just venting here and wanted to get some input on rumored release dates and upcoming solutions...

I have no clue if the oem BT puck works with the 3G, but I know other members are successfully using their iPhone 3G with mObridge bluetooth kit:

http://www.k1motorsport.com/mb/electronics.htm

I wouldn't even bother with a cradle for the iPhone 3G. Who knows, the iPhone 3.0 is probably right around the corner.

The iPhone is not only compatible with the newer bluetooth puck, but it's on MBs list of certified phones. Not sure about the 3g version but I would think it is. Find a friend with one to be sure.

Thanks. They are pretty much identical first gen and 3G, so my thinking would go like yours. Thanks. Good to know.

Or do what a few people on here have done, and what i am planning on doing and go with the Panasonic F90BT. It comes with the ipod cable and has bluetooth built in. This was you can use your iphone as both a phone and an ipod at the same time. I have the 1st gen iphone and same with a few other people on here that have gone with this head unit. It seems to be working out well for them.

If you google search for it, you can find the unit for about $600. I'm projecting about a total of $1k for the whole setup i want.

that option is swapping out the HU...
personally, i'm not a fan of aftermarket HU on MBs...
check out AndySays' mObridge kit on his C350...

I was basically in the same thinking and was about to invest in a command, until the demo video was posted and i started a thread about it to find out more.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...emo-video.html

The things mentioned in that thread basically sold me.

Telephone (Bluetooth / UHI Module) Install Question (looking for help...)

EDIT: Looks like someone merged these threads...

So my vehicle is prewired for phone. Head unit and cluster have always said "No Phone" I ordered a UHI module, Bluetooth puck, and contact plate.

After installing everything according to the PDF from MB nothing is happening! I still get "No Phone" and the Bluetooth puck doesn't light up at all. I can hear the relay in the UHI module clicking when I turn the key, so I know it is getting power. I added all the right fuses and checked to make sure I have all the relays.

My car previously had no teleaid and nothing at all on the MOST fiber loop.

Do I need programming or does it sound like something else is wrong?

Thanks!

You mentioned to me earlier that your fiber loop was already configured as:

HU Out to TEL In
TEL Out to HU In

Though I can't see how this would have worked if your MHI was not present before. I could be wrong, but you may want to just try reversing your fibers, regardless of the labels. Maybe they're labelled wrong, who knows. When I did the phone install, my fibers were connected as:

HU Out to HU In
TEL Out and TEL In were not connected to anything.

If you're sure your fibers are right, try switching them. If that doesnt work, I'd go to the dealer and get them to initiate an automatic configuration of the MOST ring using Star Diagnose.

That was my plan Nick, but right after I setup the appointment with the dealer things got even more strange. (The fiber loop was indeed connected as I told you, leaving the loop opened as the TEL connector in the trunk obviously had nothing connected to it. Maybe this is OK since my car had absolutely nothing on the fiber loop? Sounds like your car had nothing on the loop either, yet they looped back into the radio. Strange...)

Steve from MBenzNL emailed me back about this and told me that regardless of the fiber being connected at all the bluetooth puck should be lighting up. He told me I must have a fuse missing.

I rechecked everything. No fuses missing. I unplugged the MHI module in the trunk, cycled the car on and off, and then plugged the module back in. At this point the Bluetooth puck finally began flashing!

Next problem: the puck only flashes for 30 - 60 seconds. During that time I can connect my phone to the puck (lights go solid blue), but then regardless of if I connect it or not, the puck turns off completely. At that point no matter what I do (turn car on and off, unplug puck and plug it back in) it will not light up again, acts dead. I have to unplug the MHI module in the trunk, cycle the car on and off, and plug it back in. At that point I get another 60 seconds where the puck works. Even when its working and i pair my phone with it, the dash still says no phone! (Yes I have the radio on. If I turn the radio off then the dash changes to "Phone Off".

How can this be??

EDIT: Sorry this post is so damn long. I have an idea ... maybe the MHI unit is turning on, powering up the Bluetooth puck, and then "timing out" and shutting down because it cannot communicate through the MOST ring. Just thinking out loud here...

This doesnt sound right at all... Taking a shot in the dark, but it sounds like the MHI is not talking to your head unit, which may explain why the MHI is turning off the puck after 60 seconds... again, sounds like a StarDiagnose would be helpful here.

Yep I agree. I think it's simply that the MHI module is turning on, powering up the puck, looking to communicate with the HU through the MOST fiber loop, and then "timing out" and shutting down after it gets no response. After speaking to Sunil and a few others it appears that my vehicle came from the factory with the fiber loop turned off "dark" because nothing was using it.

I guess you're lucky they turned yours on at the factory and looped it back into itself.

Looks like I'll have to pay for the minimum hour of service at my dealership, just so they can click a few buttons on their laptop. Hopefully I can take advantage of it and get them to version code "USA with buzzer" in the rear SAM to enable lock / unlock beeps. I wonder what else I can get them to turn on...

Has anybody here tried to integrate the Magnadyne HFK-200 or 300? It looks pretty sick. I wonder if it would work...

OK, I took the plunge and just bought the latest BT module (I know it's been out awhile PN...5878) and it works perfectly with my iPhone 3g....the local MAC store also had the adapter piece for the iPod kit and now I can charge it and use the ipod as well. Pretty sweet setup....think it's the way to go. I know some people said it just reads TEL for contacts with multiple phone numbers, but it actually puts (MOBILE) or (HOME) after the contact's name. Glad I'm no longer tied to specific phones...Sure this is old news, but didn't want to blow $493 for a BT module that didn't work that well. Just thought I would share....no point in dropping more for a specific cradle when I can charge in the glovebox via iPod kit.

Just like I said it would!!

BTW, just to update my posts above that were merged into this thread, the problem with my phone kit was simply that my head unit needed to be version coded because it previously had nothing on the fiber bus, so the bus was actually turned off.

I have the original OEM/Motorola set up in my C. So I needed to update the phone because my service carrier stopped supporting the old school V60. I got a V3x as a replacement which added the bonus of bluetooth.

So, I set up a "puck" and the phone immediately recognized it. Ok, cool...

It was working great, but I decided to upgrade to iPhone - hmm...this didn't work with the MB rig - until I installed iPhone 2.2 firmware/software updates. Now, I have full control of the phone functions on the iPhone (haven't tested music because I have a separate iPod/HK Drive+Play installed for that)

Nice, so now we know the iPhone works well with the older system too.
