broken Kleeman header....

After almost a year with the Kleeman header/CAT, the header snapped one of its welds yesterday. I was driving from MA to NYC and noticed, when i arrived in Manhattan, the exhaust had a bit more throat to it. The sound was coming more from the engine bay then the rear of the car. After a few min of city driving, I began having a petrol smell inside the car and started thinking I had an exhaust leak or something. Then, the car got so loud that it sounded like a harley davidson on steroids. I got very nervous and took it to a muffler shop here in the city to have it checked and fixed for my ride back to MA. After inspection, the top weld on the header, just before the connector to downpipe/CAT, had cracked completely and the exhaust gas was simply flowing into the engine bay. I cannot understand how the header could crack like that after only a year of driving, but I am very p*ssed right now. The cracked header also caused a leak in the manifold, so I need to contact Kleeman for some warranty action. has this happened to anyone before? if so, whats the best way to get a replacement header/CAT from kleeman?

had my headers almost a year and use the car as a daily driver.... no problems yet. i'm hoping kleeman helps you out.

can you post pictures?

ya me too. i really like the headers but am just surprised that they would fail like this, especially since its a kleeman product. the guy at the muffler shop said the header was junk...i really didnt like hearing that for the money i spent on them. i dont really have any pics bc its been raining hardcore here in NY. does anyone know the best contact person to deal with this? is there someone through the forum that may be helpful?

damn this sucks man, when you get a chance can you take a pic for all of us that have the Kleeman Headers.

Cory was the Kleeman rep that was selling them here. Not sure if he comes in anymore though... good luck with that, keep us posted....

I haven't experienced any of the welds breaking but I did experience the header warping where the flange attaches to the exhaust runners on the engine side of the header. Please post pics as soon as you get the chance. This now makes me question the authenticity of this header.

The quality of the header is **** for the price compared to others but since the M271 doesn't have much support I guess we're SOL.

did you install the gasket?

i'm sure its authentic... if not, they went way out of their way to have a kleeman box, receipt, and label for the header... maybe it was just a faulty one?

i can't really speak to the authenticity thing. I ordered it through a CT distributor linked on the Kleeman webpage so I assume it is along the high standards Kleeman is known for. However, the header came in a box with a kleeman sticker on it, and nowhere on the header/CAT is it marked Kleeman either. Always found that to be strange especially for the money. I also have had a CAT inefficiency code for the past few months and no response from Kleeman USA regarding this issue.

My manifold, engine side, is also warped now. Not sure how long its been like this, but basically the entire header system has not held up to its quality promises. Hopefully Kleeman will do something to help me out...Ill keep everyone posted and will post some pics when i get back to MA tomorrow

wow, i was thinking of pulling the trigger for these on Monday. This now makes me second guess it. From reading on this forum, people have said that in the early packages the gasket was missing. So, that may be a key component your mishap...

Lets pump the brakes a bit. This is inconvenient for sure. I have always found Kleeman to be interactive and receptive to parts issues.

Get in touch with Kleeman, and lets see how it plays out.

I agree we should not bash Kleemann in any way and you should not rethink your decision to purchase.

I just talked to Cory and thankfully, I have 2 days until my warranty is up. He said he will send me a new system and everything should be fine! Thanks for giving me his info!

I just bought mine and it should be here Thursday. that is what Cory told me.

ya thats the warranty period. Cory is a very nice guy and very easy to work with. Despite the setback of the cracking and having to deal with getting it fixed temporarily, I am very impressed with how Kleemann is handling the situation. I have no idea how or why the header failed, but at least i know Kleemann fully supports their products. That's a huge plus for me, especially since I have loved the system since I installed it a year ago.

You made a good decision on the purchase and you will be happy with the performance increase. Hopefully no one else experiences the cracking issue, but at least you know someone is willing to help you out at Kleemann. Cheers to everyone for their input.
