DIY: Turn Signal / Cruise Control switch replacement
#51
Out Of Control!!
By the way, I rolled the dice and ordered the matching cruise control stalk (said 01-05, so was afraid it would be the squared-off version that was on the 01-02). I'll post the part# tonight, for anyone like me looking to update both stalks.
Hopefully, will be installed with redone Brabus wheel, which I should be getting soon (AGLA is back to up and running - owner went on vacation, and there were issues with the blue cf that they're doing on the rim).
OK, the part # is: A 008 545 28 24; I got it from genuinemercedesparts.com for $116.

Well, the celebration was short lived.
Now I have a ESP malfunction that may possibly be due to a bad connection somewhere in my the steering wheel.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I'll probably dismount everything this weekend and put back together hoping that will fix the bad connection.

Just did my turn signal switch using Slammer111's instructions.
Thanks a bunch. The instructions helped keep the job to under 2 hours.
What I found on my 03 CLK is that the two electrical connectors to the air bag have safety clips that are the same color as the connector. But the same applies. Just pull out the safety plug and then the switch pretty much pops out.

Bringing this thread back to life. Any luck with the ESP malfunction? I did my turn signal yesterday. Drove the car last night with no problems. Started it this morning and now have the ESP malfunction. Now I have a "ESP not available" message. Any luck with yours?

I understand that if you don't line up the sensor properly it'll give you the fault. The trick is when you remove it to make absolutely sure it doesn't spin around. There are supposed to be some arrows that line things up on the back.
If you attempt fixing it please post and let us know how it goes.

I screwed up not using the red clamp when taking it apart. I am sure mine must have spun. I did line it up when re-installing but it may have gone around a complete turn. Are you driving it with the ESP error? My car is making a loud whining noise behind the dash which it never has done before. Don't know if that's related to the malfunction or just that it's amazingly cold.

No noises on mine. Might just be coincidence.

An update. I decided to do the reset as posted by Glyn. Car running, turn wheel to the left all the way, then right to left five times. I did this, then made a short trip to the store, about one mile. ESP warning still on. About an hour later, I had to drive to work, about 40 miles each way. The ESP warning was not there. Got home and again no malfunction. I won't say this fixed the problem until I go about a week, but right now it seems to have worked.

Thanks to everyone posting instructions here, especially slammer111 and Bif powell for taking the time to post pictures and detailed instructions. I finally replaced my turn signal combination switch today after much frustration with it not sticking in the turn position. In the last couple of weeks it basically never stuck in the indent position, especially for right turns, forcing me to hold it there.
I followed the instructions, and also printed out the WIS instructions from mbusa. According to the WIS, you remove first remove the whole switch unit with stalks and then remove the clock spring. I followed the instructions here, as it was easier to remove just the clock spring unit first. It was a bear to wiggle off, and I tried a number of times before it, surprisingly, finally just popped off.
I did assemble the whole unit before putting it back, i.e. put the clock spring back on the stalks and then slid the whole unit back on the steering column. I also found it much better to remove the T-30 (the one underneath the column) completely before attempting to put that stalk assembly back. In my case, the screw was not laying right, and would have required me to remove the assembly to reorient the screw.
I'm a little worried about the ESP faults, but I didn't get anything on the short test drive I took to check out everything. As other posters mentioned, the combination switch comes with the red pin to avoid movement in the clock spring, as well as a warning to use it. I made sure to keep it in the clock spring the whole time.
Dealer charged me $120 (incl tax) for the switch, which I think is not too bad.

I just replaced my combination switch and the silver "tube" shaft that the switch clamps to is rotating about 5 degrees up either way when I use the turn signal. I know that the combination switch is clamped correctly, it's the tube that it is clamped to that is rotating. Anyone know a fix for this? If I use the turn signals with minimum strength it hardly moves, bu I know it is not right and cannot be tightened by the Torx screw that is access underneath the column. Any help would be appreciated!

Just keep working it with a small screwdriver(make sure you have taken out the 3 T-10 screws!!I forgot once and couldn't figure out why the hell it was giving me such a problem), It'll eventually come out. When you pop it out throw a piece of tape across it so it doesn't spin and you'll be good!

mt8667, I have the exact same #$%*!! problem. Just took my steering assembly apart again. For the life of me I cannot figure out what is supposed to stop the entire silver tube from rotating. There seems to be no physical restraint.

slammer111, here's what happened to mine. After trying to tighten the hell out of the T-30 on that collar I found I had stripped the threads off the top part of the collar, the part the screw is supposed to pull down and tighten to the column. I found a nut to slide in on top and tightened it that way. Also put some aluminum tape in the opening of the switch to make it a little more snug. Worked like a charm....

^ mt8667, the entire METAL tube rotates. See my picture. My plastic sleeve has a good grip on the piece circled in the pic. The 1 bolt is definitely not stripped. I can actually get it nice and tight.
With everything taken apart, I can physically move the circled part with my hand (ie rotate it like the steering wheel). Not sure if this means the part has actually failed?
