Conti ExtremeContact DWS??
I have been toying with what I would want for the C7 rims for the Coupe (224/45/17). I am very happy with the Michelins (Primacy MXV4 H-rated) that I have been running in the past. I do not push the limits with the car, but considering about an 80 mile round trip commute each day, I have to get decent life from the tires.
It looks like the stock Conti's are way to soft for my commuting (if the treadwear rating is any indication 240 vs. 640 on the Michelins). I am pretty sure that I want to stick with Continental or Michelin tires.
I found the Conti ExtremeContact DWS on Discount Tire's website. Surprisingly the treadwear rating is 540, and it has really good reviews from everyone that posted there. There seem to be quite a few BMW 3-series owners that have posted and they are happy. It looks like it might be a good looking tire, and be a pretty good choice -- so far.
Has anyone had any experience with these tires? Thanks!
You have to look at specific manufacturers for more detail at a specific tire...
xpoloniusreapx - I did not realize the treadwear was manufacturer specific. Very interesting information, I think that explains a lot. I probably won't be ready for them until after August.
I have to say, so far, I think I notice more road noise since I put them on. I can't 100% confirm this until I mount the rear 2 as well, to rule out the possibility that my worn rears are causing the noise.
Also, the sidewalls bow out a bit (by design) compared to other low profiles like my previous Goodyear Eagle F1AS. This makes them look more like touring tires than low pro's.
Honestly if I could go back, I think I'd try to source my Goodyear's again, but they were pricey. I got the Conti's for $850 total locally (tirerack was sold out at the time).
After 15,000 the wear is okay. I've had them rotated across the axles to change the direction they spin twice - once at 6,000 and last at 12,000 on the tires. Nonetheless, it isn't looking like I'll get much more than 30,000 out of the rears. I was talking with John about this recently and I think we owners of the SS's with staggered are just never going to get more than about that out of rears. The fronts are doing fine, though I'm running high PSI (on John's suggestion) to keep the shoulder wear down because it's a b!tch in my car.
I'd recommend these tires. They're quieter than the Kumho Ecsta ASXs they replaced, but the ASXs were cheaper and lasted 30,000 miles too. I paid $583 installed for the 4 DWS tires. The ASXs would've been $554 installed for 4.
I like these tires, that is true. However, when I go to replace them in the future and they tell me they're back-ordered, I'll just put readily available ASXs back on it. Take what you will from that.

as far as grand-touring tires...I really have no interest in them since you can get Max performance tires at a cheaper price with still very good treadwear.
for the money you are going to spent on the Contiextreme contact you might as well save $40 each and buy the General Exclaim UHP for $96 each from tirerack and trust me these do last quite a while.
