Conti ExtremeContact DWS??

I have been looking at tires, and am curious what the collective wisdom here says.

I have been toying with what I would want for the C7 rims for the Coupe (224/45/17). I am very happy with the Michelins (Primacy MXV4 H-rated) that I have been running in the past. I do not push the limits with the car, but considering about an 80 mile round trip commute each day, I have to get decent life from the tires.

It looks like the stock Conti's are way to soft for my commuting (if the treadwear rating is any indication 240 vs. 640 on the Michelins). I am pretty sure that I want to stick with Continental or Michelin tires.

I found the Conti ExtremeContact DWS on Discount Tire's website. Surprisingly the treadwear rating is 540, and it has really good reviews from everyone that posted there. There seem to be quite a few BMW 3-series owners that have posted and they are happy. It looks like it might be a good looking tire, and be a pretty good choice -- so far.

Has anyone had any experience with these tires? Thanks!

You also have to remember that tread wear ratings are brand specific!!! That means that a 300 for a Pirelli may wear comparably to a 180 for Bridgestone( just throwing names out)
You have to look at specific manufacturers for more detail at a specific tire...

Good luck getting them. Most 17" sizes have been on backorder for over a month. I was told by my local tire shop, that the ones I have on order are due late August. Matt, aka lilbenz230, has had them for quite a while and likes them.

Johnand - I didn't realize that Matt had them. He is close to me, and I believe his commute is similar. Cool! Thanks!

xpoloniusreapx - I did not realize the treadwear was manufacturer specific. Very interesting information, I think that explains a lot. I probably won't be ready for them until after August.

I bought 4 of these a few months back. Only have the front 2 mounted, the rears I have sitting until after summer before I put them on.

I have to say, so far, I think I notice more road noise since I put them on. I can't 100% confirm this until I mount the rear 2 as well, to rule out the possibility that my worn rears are causing the noise.

Also, the sidewalls bow out a bit (by design) compared to other low profiles like my previous Goodyear Eagle F1AS. This makes them look more like touring tires than low pro's.

Honestly if I could go back, I think I'd try to source my Goodyear's again, but they were pricey. I got the Conti's for $850 total locally (tirerack was sold out at the time).

It's strange the different experiences two can have with the same tires on the same car. My DWS tires have exactly 15,000 miles on them now and are still very quiet (IMO). The Sport sedans aren't ever going to be quiet cars and I have no expectations of it, especially the C230Ks. The later V6 230s are a good deal quieter. All that said, I'm not noise sensitive. The My C230K is wayyyy quieter than the 135i. So it is good enough.

After 15,000 the wear is okay. I've had them rotated across the axles to change the direction they spin twice - once at 6,000 and last at 12,000 on the tires. Nonetheless, it isn't looking like I'll get much more than 30,000 out of the rears. I was talking with John about this recently and I think we owners of the SS's with staggered are just never going to get more than about that out of rears. The fronts are doing fine, though I'm running high PSI (on John's suggestion) to keep the shoulder wear down because it's a b!tch in my car.

I'd recommend these tires. They're quieter than the Kumho Ecsta ASXs they replaced, but the ASXs were cheaper and lasted 30,000 miles too. I paid $583 installed for the 4 DWS tires. The ASXs would've been $554 installed for 4.

I like these tires, that is true. However, when I go to replace them in the future and they tell me they're back-ordered, I'll just put readily available ASXs back on it. Take what you will from that.

I dont trust the discount tire reviews because I've heard that the company sometimes goes on there and gives their tires good reviews. I remember I went with some general tire exclaim uhp because of the reviews and after getting them the road noise was loud and the wet traction sucked. I go with tirerack now. awesome customer service and got my wheels in like 2 days from their warehouse. I personally loved my Yokohama S. Drives when I replaced my stock tires, road noise was nonexistent, car handled like it was on rail in the dry and wet. I would have gotten them when I got my 18s but I decided to try the Pirelli PZero Nero All season tires and so far after about 6 months with them on and countless 4 hour road trips I can't complain about them. Handles great (not as good as the Yokohamas but up there), no real road noise (except for the wheel rub on bumps from lowering the car, I know I need to roll my fenders, I'll do it today maybe or tomorrow when my gfs at work and I have nothing to do), great wear so far. I'll most likely stick with these tires or the s. drives when I need to replace my tires in the future.

treadwear is measured by comparing to the CMT (course monitoring tires), but the CMT has had three manufacturer since they started this rating system AND they are only loosely enforced saying the manufacturer cannot overstate the test result. SO each manufacturer would all rate them slightly different for marketing purposes.

as far as grand-touring tires...I really have no interest in them since you can get Max performance tires at a cheaper price with still very good treadwear.

for the money you are going to spent on the Contiextreme contact you might as well save $40 each and buy the General Exclaim UHP for $96 each from tirerack and trust me these do last quite a while.

I've got a set from tiresavings.com, best prices around, and not on back order. The reviews are outrageous on these. I haven't had them on long enough to comment, but they seem like a solid tire.

i just put on the conti extremecontact DW on my 19" wheels and the ride quality is very good, low noise and great performance. Much better than the Nitto Invos they replaced and the treadwear is supposed to be very good for a high performance tire. I would imagine the DWS would be a good tire too. I had the michelin primacy tires a long time ago and they wore down pretty fast and the shoulders scalped pretty hard after 10K. I have had very good experiences with all the contis i have tried.

There is nothing wrong with Conti tyres in general & on most cars. They just have a bad reputation on W203/204 chassis for noise & harshness once they wear. Careful & frequent rotation of tyres to change rolling direction can ameliorate this to a degree. If you are sensitive to noise then be careful.

The situation is worse on pre facelift cars with harder suspension bushing.

I'd advise anyone to definitely change the direction they rotate every 6,000 miles like I have. It's really made the wear much more even.
