My window is gone.

Well, it's sitting in the bottom of the door panel. My father was complaining on why I would use my window locks and when went to close the window from my controls, it closed. Later on, I opened all my windows and drove home. I got home, closed my windows, and the same window would not come up. When I close the door, the inner mechanism shakes and hits the glass.

Looking down into the panel, some mechanism is sticking out and hitting the glass. I'll be taking pictures as I strip down this box of trouble.

You have the worst luck with your car must have been abused or something. I will say that i know the early models have plastic mounts that are known to break. GL man

There is a plastic plug & clamp arrangement that hold the window to the mechanism. You are not having much luck!

See all diagrams I posted here

Bad luck combined with what might be some of the worst quality cars to ever come from Benz equals Lane's situation. The early 203s were (with few exceptions) absolute nightmares.

Taking the door panel off is not difficult, takes about 15 minutes. Once you have it off I'm sure it will be obvious whats come loose. There are instructions on the forum somewhere that walk through the panel removal.

Right. I've done it to replace door grabs. It's not hard, I just fear it's some rare part that my dealer won't stock because it's never broken on other cars. That'll lead me to another few days of down time.

My car's plastic is so brittle. Even the lock on my steering wheel rack that holds my adjustment broke. That was a good 500 dollar repair.

if the car has been sitting in the sun for majority of its life it would also compound the problem.

one of the reason my car don't have a lot of trim issues is that the car has been garaged for most of its life.

Yeah! I've watched this situation on the board because SA never really had the problem. Mainly I think because we had the task of debugging many problems on the early cars & East London started building inventory in 1999. We did the squeak & rattle kit & stepper motor arms redesign etc. etc. & had a local content program. e.g. door pulls don't break on SA cars. All local parts get thrown on the roof of the factory in our blazing sun to see how they stand UV.

The worse cars seem to be the Brazilian builds for USA. They too had a local content program. Rusting problems seem confined to Brazilian builds.

As of yesterday my car has had 2 X castor bushes, 1 X tranny drain plug washer & RR stop light lamp in 7 years. (plus brake pads & tyres of course)

Also the C240 drivetrain had seen previous use in older Benz models including the E Class & was proven tough.

Benz indeed had problems with C & E Class quality during that era of computer simulated endurance testing. It is well documented - but all cars are not equal in this regard.

Lane - a word of encouragement. People who have sorted out the early problems seem to end up with good vehicles. I think you must be close to complete with your car.

Yep, Lane, Glyn is right. After all is said and done (and you finally get your hands clean again!) you'll have a good car. The powertrain is very solid and - perhaps most importantly - the safety features you've got are still current by today's standards. I hope you can get this car sorted soon and start enjoying it.

Window Actuator: 150 dollars.

Part comes in friday. I'm not obligated to buy it, so I'm trying to get to the actuator that is supposedly broken. Where to from here?

Looks like a vault. I guess that's why the doors feel so good and solid. You ever seen behind the door panel in a Honda?

I think so. Just the sheet metal that would cave in upon impact.

I doubt it is the actuator. Likely just the plastic attachment parts that hold the glass to the mechanism - cheap!

In other words, part 110? As of now, my door looks like my picture provided. Is it safe to remove the airbag? Every time I mess with airbags, I feel like I could get knocked out by a pillow at any moment!

Thanks for the pictures, Glyn! I'll tear down my door a bit further. In the picture, the airbag doesn't have a wire connected to it. I assume there will be when I remove it.

Is it safe to remove the airbag piece, along with disconnecting it's plug? I know to disconnect the battery upon reconnecting the plug..

Lane - You can disconnect the airbag - Make sure your key is not in the ignition. Will try & find you are rear door wiring diagram. Benz wiring diagrams are not intuitive though!!
