Javvy, when I replaced this bushing on my ML, trans fluid didn't come out at all (the connector it self was drenched in oil, see the attached picture).

Just to be sure, have the front end slightly higher, then no trans fluid should come out when you remove the pilot bushing (aka 13 pin connector). There is a metal cover protecting the pilot bushing. Remove that metal protector by removing one star screw and you will see the cap of the pilot bushing.

Reason why they (the dealer where your car was serviced) drained fluid - may be they wanted to check inside the pan to see if there are any metal shavings in the pan and also may wanted to check the quality of the fluid. My guess is that after checking everything else, seeing the pilot bushing leaking, they must've concluded that the leaking bushing is the root cause of the issue.

You access the plug/bush from under the car - front RHS diagonal of tranny. You loose a bit of fluid - not much - just top up. I think the dealer dropped the sump/pan to have a look only to realise that the problem was the bush. They should know better. Anyway you got half an oil change free. If they had flushed the converter it would have been 9.5 quarts.

You access the TCU from inside the car under the passenger kick plate.

Foo - not my car - Just pics I've collected. My car is equally new inside with full Alpacca light grey leather & the TCU is on the other side.

Good luck with with you checks. Look for oil on the floor below the TCU.

Proof!!
