excessive wear outer edge of front tires???

hey guys so here's the deal. I'm running 19x8 up front with 225/35...is it possible that widening my tires to a 235/35 would help this? something is causing them to slightly crack on the outer outside edges of both front tires...I had them removed to swapped to adjacent sides to help prolong the life and I'm assuming the damage is being done when turning and putting the weight of the front of the chassis on the edge of the tire like that. Any thoughts?

What are your offsets? What do you mean by "slightly crack"? Can you post a pic?

My two front tires are feathering inner and outer corners for about a year now.
Still haven't really figured out what's happening.

Maybe someone will figure it out in this new thread.

I think someone on the board has told me that our cars tend to push through turns and our caster is not all too suitable, either excessive or lacking.

Hope someone else can chime in!

Here we go! Look for Frank's post on the first page. It's normal. Please search more a bit more thoroughly next time. It took all of one minute to find this thread.

Less aggressive driving also helps!

If your alignment is correct & all bushing is in good condition - try increasing pressure to compensate. A 235 tyre will help & is a better choice for 8" rims. That is what I run on 8 inch rims - albeit 17". If your offsets are in the low 30's then a 235 is max you can go without strut clearance issues.

I can feel the outer front shoulders wearing away.

IMHO we need a degree more camber, does anyone make a decent camber kit for the front?

You can dial in a degree more negative camber with the 3 way camber bushes & fluted bolts. You don't need need a camber kit.

ok so i guess this is normal what I'm getting...I'll take soem pics tonight to try and show detail but since I've swithc the tires the tears are on the inner edge now. Also Glyn the 3 way camber bushes and fluted bolts is that something we can purchase or something we already have and can adjust ourselves? I'm assuming this would decrease turn radius correct? I'd take that over dieing tires anyday. Fact is my tires are about 70% in the middle and 30 on the edges.

I've also increased pressure to 50psi (max for my toyo t1r) also I think once these are done for I will switch to the 235. My offsets are 32 i believe.

Mav - You have the 3 way bushes but Benz fit standard bolts - You need to buy the bolts to have the extra adjustability. I too have 32 offsets - you should be good to run 235 tyres up front. 50 psi is hellish high. I was talking more in high 30's

It's been my experience with different tires (been through a set of Michelins, Kumhos, and working on Conti DWS now) that these cars wear the outer shoulders of the front tires and the center of the rears. I've been playing with pressures to see if I can change it or slow it some but this is normal stuff. My car has always had perfect alignment.

ya i had terrible alignment on my rears that ate up my toyo t1rs...that cost me 700 between tires and alignment. now my rears are good switched to some nitto nt555.

Mav - your tyres will take Max 50 psi but that is not suggested running pressure. It is mainly dependent on Axle weight. These cars as Matt says are inclined to front shoulder wear because of the suspension set up & the fact that they are inherent understeerers. However a wider tyre on the same size rim & higher pressure will mitigate this to a degree as would some negative camber. If you are a very enthusiastic driver go to a thicker sway bar on the rear to reduce understeer.

ya thats on the list...tirying to find a used one at the moment. and idk what pressure to fill them at then...it says 50psi on the tire not necessarily max...plus i think i took them to like 45-48...

Good man! hope you find a SH one.

Benz recommended pressures are in the low 30psi's. With larger rims & lower profile tyres as you have the pressure range you should use for even wear dependent on load s/b in the 33 to 39 psi range - seldom over 40psi. The car must be as uncomfortable as hell approaching 50 psi with a 35 profile tyre & centre rear wear awful on the rear. There is no reason for centre rear wear other than over inflation.

The only time these recommendations become void is if you fit smaller tyres than the rim is designed for to pull the sidewall for clearance - Then you are in no man's land. This is a bad practice as it makes the tyre operate outside it's design parameters & can lead to sidewall failure.

so now I just noticed that my driver side front tire is not starting to warp on the wall in about a 3" section. I swear my luck with tires is rediculous!!!!!! I'm running Toyo T1R up front so they're good tires.

THis just angers me to no end. I am convinced now that my suspension up front must be jacked up. I know many of us are running 19" wheels and dont have this much tire issues, right?!

Im running 235/35/19 in the front and im having the same issue as you on almost brand new tires.. Side walls are being eaten away.. U can see little chunks of tire missing.. Check your bushings they may need to be replaced anyone know the part number? Thx

just letting you know T1R is very prone to damage even tho they are good tires because they are very soft. my T1R on the front of my now-gone-19" LM had heavy inner wear where when I had 18" PS2s did not have this issue.

just so people know, the psi number on the tire is to show max psi for the tire. Not how much psi the tires should be inflated too. The correct psi numbers for your car are listed by the manufacturer...usually on the door panel. If you want a little bit better mpg..the max psi i would go is 40psi and no more.

something with a high tread life count which I assume = harder rubber.
