UK right hookers are made in South Africa, But i bought a Estate which are still made in germany along with the coupe. German cars should be made buy germans same goes for Jags should be made at Browns Lane or castle Brom not in an old ford factory in Liverpool for christ sake

Extending your logic, I guess Ford should shut down all their factories in the UK and Europe. After all, Fords should be made in the US.

I believe a portion of the VIN indicates manufacturing location.

i thought it was a known fact that C240s for North America are made in Brazil and ones for Europe are made in South Africa. Also, you can tell manf. city and country by looking at sticker on passenger side door area. Many have made comments/questions of quality but they're all pretty much consistent from my understanding....its just that ppl. like to know a european car is made in europe....helps em sleep better at nite or something

No, as usual, most of the above is only partly correct:

-SOME C-CLass sedans for the North American market are made in Brazil from knock-down kits [in other words, it's an assembly factory - most of the components are brought in from Germany or South Africa and screwed together on site]. These constitute a very small minority of cars imported to the NA market.

-All right-hand drive Cs are assembled in South Africa, for all markets that drive on the left [UK, Australia, Japan, etc].

-All other Cs, which means the vast majority, are made in the usual German locations - Bremen, Rastatt, Sindelfingen.

[Some BMW 3ers, a little larger percentage than MB, are made in South Africa for the US market.]

Only right hand drive sedans are made in South Africa. Right hand drive coupes and wagons are made at Sindelfingen.

Most of the sedans built in Brazil stay in South America. A few come to the US, but most US sedans are built in Germany.

My US spec C240 was built in Germany, according to the label on the door.

[/COLOR] No Fords are Made in the UK any more as us brits cannot built anything that will last more than a week without breaking down, The last US built in the UK was the Probe, Well that was a POS, Now ford are messing with Land Rover - Aston Martin - Jag and Volvo The new Jag x type is based on a Mondeo and has been a sales flop. People do not want fords badged as a Jag or Aston or Volvo

Isn't this same "knock-down kits" process also used in the German factories? I imagine it is, based on the fact that I have yet to see a sub-assembly on my car that is actually made by MB and not some sub-contactor. I've never been to a factory, but I assume ALL MB factories are just assembly-only facilities.

hate to say but if the old Brit car manf. did such a great job (Jag, Rover group, Aston, Mini, etc) how come they are all owned by another manf? also if I rem jags from 70s and 80s they were known as garage queens, and ppl. tell u when u buy jag u gotta buy 2 b/c one is always breaking down etc. Again i'm not saying image is not important b/c its nice to hear/know in ppl perception that jags, mercs, bimmers, etc are built in their own origin perspective countries but we're in a global economy and companies are having to do all sorts of mergers and producing more "global platforms/chassis" to cut cost and survive. it'll be naive to say the x-type or s-type is crap b/c it shares parts with some ford models...or same goes for MB b/c it share parts with some Chrysler parts

I am the first to admit that ALL BRITISH CAR HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL BE UTTER CRAP and i have never and will never own one. Me and most of my family buy european cars ( Great Britain is not Europe) The sales of the X & S type have been poor here as people do not like the idea of a Jag sharing Ford parts as most people see for Fords as Mass produced Crap.Chrysler on the other hand is now sharing parts for a well respected German company. I read this week that Jag will no longer share platforms with Ford because of this.

yes that's how I found out this one was built in Brasil (or is it Brazil ??)

the fit and finish is fine...altho its filthy inside (its white with tan interior and the tank was only 1/2 full when I rcv the car). I will never own a car with a lite interior ever again...mine is ash/grey and its hard to keep clean.

/// day four in this car by the way...I got tired of calling MB to see if my car was ready...so I'll let them call me whenever that may be...they're waiting on a window/seat switch part for the pax door....I dropped it off on 4-10. I don't care - free car !!

Where built?

WHERE a car is built/assembled is not as important as HOW they are built/assembled. Quality is a mindset and not a national treasure. Before Japan was enlightened by Mr. Deming they had the worst quality record in the world. "Made in Japan" meant cheap and poor quality. Besides, German cars are not assembled by Germans in Germany...it's considered a low class job that they hire foreigners to do (yes, even Americans!). As well, most of the quality problems we see with our Cs are parts, not craftsmanship related. The Germans (and Americans) still haven't figured out vendor relations like the Japanese.

It depends on the dealer. I've had my E320 loaner for 5 days now and they said mileage isn't an issue as long as I don't take the car out of state since I saw that the limit was 75 miles per day. I am pretty friendly with the people there so YMMV. I've put on around 600 miles or so.
