I agree on the sway bar. Mine was making a popping noise after I did some work on the front end. (swapping springs without a spring compressor) I was winging it without instructions and I left one side of the sway bar connected and disconnected the other. When I got it all back together (didn't want to go easy) whalla! Pop pop pop. The solution was have the alignment shop loosen and re-torque with weight on the wheels. I was tired of fooling with it.

I have the similar issues. When letting my car stand for a few hours. Basically here is my issue:
After a few hours of having the car parked, say I'm reversing out of a drive way or parking spot, as soon as i apply the brakes to be able to shift to D, it makes a knocking-popping sound twice one after another. Then, after that noise, when I come to a stop it does it again twice. After that, the noise goes away until the next time I settle my car for a few hours. Doesn't happen over bumps or any rough roads. Just when applying brakes on a reverse or take off from having the car sit somewhere for a while. I saw the thread that TruTaing made about common suspension noises. I ordered sway bar end links and replaced them last week. Issue is still occurring for me.
Any other ideas?

stop car (pad is in the front)
back up - brake (pad slides to the back)
forward - brake (pad slides to the front)

Wouldn't this be a constant noise if it was a break pad/caliper issue? It's only happening first time reverse or forward doing a stop, after that no noise. I can't replicate it after it first pops.

Brake pad is a little bit under sized. The pads are already in the front when you get home, back out of driveway, step on brake, pads slides back making the noise. You pull forward, stop at stop sign, pad slides forward making the noise. This won't happen again until next time you back out of parking space.

The pads don't move front -> rear under braking. They move slightly up and down in the caliper with the rotor rotation. The retaining springs are supposed to keep them floating in the caliper pad grooves. The sound you hear is them either banging on brake application or release (and the pad falls). Anyway, that's how the noise manifested itself with my car. But it wasn't a 'popping noise', it was more of a loud tick. Of course my 'loud tick' may not be your 'pop'.

Sorry about the confusion.

One thing i have noticed in the past weeks is (and i don't know if it is because i just recently changed my rear pads) every time i reverse, and sometimes i hear this, when I press the pedal going in reverse i can hear a slight knocking sound coordinating when i pump my breaks (only in reverse have i noticed this). It is not as loud as my other noise complain but it is noticeable. Like a metal tapping noise.

I had the entire front suspension of my car thoroughly (and I mean thoroughly) inspected and then tightened up and lubricated on Thursday. I had asked them to replace the sway-bar end links but that turned out not to be needed, they just needed tightened.
The car feels much better! The pop noise is still present, though, and still a mystery. Going back in within the next two weeks to try again and get a transmission oil change.
The car got a 100% clean bill of health @ 95,000 miles.

I use an independent mechanic that is not "specialized" in any one make. I paid $112 for labor for a brake job, oil change, tire rotation, air filter change, and all the suspension diagnostics/tightening/lubrication. I always have my own parts.

That sounds like a pretty sweet deal for all that work. I would just need the suspension diagnostics/tightening/lubrication done - did you happen to bring any of your own parts for that? I would assume not. Thanks man.

The place I use is awesome and I'd trust them with anything. I brought swaybar links but those turned out not to be necessary. They didn't need any parts and just charged me $36 to do a thorough inspection of the whole front end, lube everything, and tighten things down. My car had some suspension clunks but they're gone now after the tightening.
