Someone's in the trunk!

Wait wait wait.

I have forgotten to mention this about my car and it has been doing it for as long as I can remember. Sometimes when I come to a stop there will be a.. well, banging.. noise from the rear of my car. It sounds JUST like someone is hitting the trunk lid from inside trying to get out and I swear I don't have any dates in there in spite of what I like to tell people who are taken by surprise by the noise.

People who ride in my car regularly no longer even notice. Those who rarely ride ask and I always tell them I have someone in the trunk. The noise is so convincing that I have had people in my car freak out and had to stop and show them the trunk is empty.

Anyone know what this might be? I'm at a little over 90,000 miles and it has done this off and on since probably 30,000. It is not something I can demonstrate and there is no certain pattern that "causes" it. Until recently I only noticed it when it was raining but now it does it at all different times. I call it a "quirk" rather than a problem since it hasn't led to any other issue.

Could be one of the fuel level sensors under the back seat. Is there any correlation with amount of gas in the tank? I've heard the odd one get noisy when fuel sloshes around in the tank/s

Maybe rear subframe bushes. I'm sure you have checked all the spare wheel crap.

maybe its your trunk monkey... Maybe its the rear control arms? Kinda like how the car makes a clank sound when you go over bumps when the front control arms go bad?

Yep, I have checked that stuff. I'm not sure if I was clear in my original post but this happens when the car is entirely motionless. It is sitting still, no suspension movement, nothing except the guy in the trunk banging around. That's why I would say it is definitely not suspension related.

It does not seem to be related to the fuel level but this one I will watch more closely.

I put a minor edit in my post. Fuel sloshes around in your tank for quite a while after coming to a stop & the level floats follow suit.

MIne too Matt...Just like you said when crawling to a stop. I've had it on a lift and checked the suspension and everything looks fine. I got no clue.

Hmmz.. ghost in the trunk eh?

Here's my stab. Did you check to see if you have any loose hard article in the trunk?

I had something similar at one point and I keep hearing a bang. I later figurer that i was my metal flashlight rolling around. I usually hear this sound when stoping or picking up. Going up hills and down hills. With that in mind it was surely the rolling flashlight.

Same happens in my house after we use the water or flush a toilet, a couple minutes after when all is quite and nobody is using anything, a loud clunk from underneath the house. Guessing is a pipe not strapped down somewhere shifting after the pressure subsides, maybe your problem too. Fuel filter? Heat shield?

Haha thanks for your suggestions guys.. I think Glyn is probably right. There is nothing loose in my car and as I say this only happens when the car is completely still (so nothing suspension or anything would be moving around).

I'm REALLY glad this didn't happen while I was riding with you! Getting in the car with someone you barely know and them telling you they have a dead body in the trunk... I would have been *****ting myself!!!

Oh yeah Drew.. but I would've told you it was just my boyfriend and there was no reason to worry. The noise is VERY realistic and does sound like someone in the trunk.

My '03 C230 did it and so does my '05 C230. I barely notice it anymore.
