You don't need a DIY - it's dead simple if you have a set of reverse Torx sockets. See 56

90 deg C Thermostat is P/N A2712000015 for very cold weather
87 deg C Thermostat P/N is A2712030375 for normal conditions

Please feel free to ask questions.

Very easy...only took me 15 min to change!

Just take 2 bolts out(no.77 in Glyn's diagram)...pull it straight out and that's it!

actually neither does the Atlanta mb parts place. Looks like the only one really available is the higher temp one.

I just ordered a 2712000015 Wahler thermostat to correct a P0128 that I got this morning. I've been reviewing the DIYs, but this is the first that doesn't mention draining the radiator. Is it true that it's just the two screws? Or do I still need to drain some of the fluid out?

You don't have to drain it, unless you want to fulsh the radiator.

Okay, I just ordered off RM European. Got the same failure.

The only version available now is 90C, and the part # is now 271-203-05-75.

Why they made 2 versions with a (tiny imo) 3C difference is completely beyond me. That's probably why they eliminated the 87C version.

Okay, I just did the repair on the M271. It's not *that* easy.

The 1st pic shows the piece you want to remove (dead centre of the picture). You can see the 2 bolts as well.

The 2nd pic shows the assembly after you pull it out. The thermostat is at the end of the hose. Turns out I had a 90C one put in at the factory. (I'm in Canada). Note where the gaskets are! There are TWO.

Sticking points:

1. You need a 3" extension on top of the E10 inverted Torx bit. I that the middle section of that part (where the hose connects to) got in the way of my ratchet head. Hence the extension.

2. Because of the extension, the intake hose is now in the way. Remove the end of the hose that connects to the airbox (2 clips up top, 1 clip at bottom), and also the big ring-shaped clip at the middle of the hose! I didn't do the ring clip, and snapped (unraveled) my intake tube by bending it a bit too much. This would've been avoided had I also undone the middle clip and given myself the extra few cm of space! Ugh. Time to get some Krazy glue.

3. Coolant WILL gush (glug) out. I thought it'd just be a little bit, but basically the spare reservoir emptied itself. I have no idea how much I lost, so it's time to make a trip to the dealership and also pick up some distilled water. My guess would be 1-2L.

if you've used flexible ratchet, I think, you'd been able to remove the thermostat without having to use the extension or have to remove that large intake pipe.

Is it necessary?

Freaking classic. . . I broke a tab on the pipe # 65 on the diagram which was holding onto the thermostat. It was tough pulling the actual thermostat out so be weary when tugging on that thing. I got it off but now I gotta order a new A271 200 1256
