New spin on the iPod integration kit. Fresh Idea, need some help.

Can an emulated iPod drive the integration kit? I have an idea/desire to have a carputer and want to continue using my steering wheel controls to control the music (and not have to rip out my current stock system). My idea is to have an emulated iPod on windows box and have a usb->female-iPod adapter so the Int. kit can interface with the emulator.

Any info/knowledge?!

edit: fyi it is a second gen ipod integration kit (ill find the part number later) and I have a 2006 c280 4 matic with a 6-disc in dash changer...no bluetooth or anything
\
Thanks,
John

Interesting...

That I know of the ipod adapter is only a phono jack (someone correct me if wrong) so with that being I don't think the steering wheel controls can control the ipod then again I don't know much.

As per a car computer look into drivesoft.net its the only car driven computer that will work and its awesome! How I know? I have installed and played with them.

The idea is a solid one. Control the carputer with the car controls through the ipod interface. I'll be totally honest with you, its very much so doable ... if you happen to be a control systems engineer (and a dam good one). I don't know of any off the shelf product that can do that.

However personally I would use a relay board and pass non audio data through to a parallel port, then put together a HID driver to pass that data to the OS.

For the audio it only needs a little soldering and a trip to radio shack.

If I were you I would go with the normal aux kit and just run the line to the laptop headphone jack, if I ever go back to the carputer route I would totally do this. In the mean time I find the Ipod touch to be much better then a carputer.

What exactly do you mean by that? There are plenty of car-computer manufacturers and hardware available that will work just fine. See www.mp3car.com for tons of resources on this.

I am an EE, but have no practical knowledge of systems engineering...Sounds like I need to get some undergrads to take this up as their senior project.

I knew someone would bring up the AUX kit. Not the option I want, but thanks for the input.

Go to drivesoft.net and read up on the specs. first time I installed one of these was back in 04 and everything work 100%. I'm pretty sure by now there's more competition but back 6 years ago this was the way to go.

The iPod integration kit allows you to control the iPod from the steering wheel. It actually works very similar to an iPod dock...which just gave me a GREAT idea.
