Brief winding noise when stopped?

03 c240 here. My car sometimes makes a noise, and it only does it when I'm at a standstill. It sounds like winding of a motor. It comes on for a few seconds, usually < 5 secs. I've only made short trips since I got the car (10 min trips at max). The car now has 87K. AC is off and the engine temps are ok so I'm not sure if it's the radiator fan that comes on briefly?

Thanks

Do you mean you hear buzzing etc noise after you have switched off the engine for 5 secs that comes from in front of the driver in the engine compartment on a US car?

If so that is normal - It's all the servos, air pumps, fuel rail pump, purge system etc. shutting down after switch off & entirely normal on a V6.

The sound comes with the engine running and when I'm at a stop. For example today, I ran the car for about 5 minutes, stopped at a light, and the winding noise came for a few secs. It definitely sounded like a motor or pump. There is no sequence to when the sound appears, but it happens almost everyday. My foot is on the brake if that helps.

When running the most likely culprits are the fuel pump - noise from under the seat behind you. A noisy tensioner pulley on the Poly V belt or the power steering pump.

All of these can make a noise intermittently.

The PS pump is usually the easiest to diagnose. Does you car make a noise with the steering at full lock? If so it is air in the system going through the pressure release valves. Top up fluid & prime the system by turning the steering from lock to lock 5 times & check the level again.

The other two you are going to have to listen to carefully.

Post a noise clip for us.

Mine does the same, but I've only noticed it while parked, with the heat on. The sound reminds me of one of those old kids toys, the ones you blow into and it has like a little fan in it and it makes that winding/pinwheel kind of sound. Only way I can describe mine...

Getting a sound clip would be difficult because the noise comes whenever it wants to. Like today, I didn't hear it come on at all. I don't think Ive heard my PS pump make a noise at full steering lock, but I'll look into it tonight. Someone also suggested that it could be the condenser fan. Ill report back my findings.

Do not worry. I have the same sound. I've been to Mercedes dealership and a mechanic told me that is an oxigen regulator that activates itself in order to control the exhaust. It is right on the bottom underneath the antifreeze container. He even touched it and managed to produce that noise so i can hear it and compare to what i was hearing before.

The EGR system & excess air fan systems can also make a noise on a V6. Noises are always hell to describe & these cars do make some distinctive noises that are normal. Even the auto transmission can make some wierd noises if you are sensive to these things especially if the fluid level is marginally incorrect.

I also have this problem with the M272 "E30" 3.0l. It last about 20secs until it dies down. Possibly the air pump.

ROFL.

I hear various motors winding down for few seconds after shut down - on my '07 C280.
On the other hand, on my '04 C320, as son as I shutdown, everything stops silently.

Nothing seems to be out of ordinary in either of those cars. Everything is working perfectly on both cars.
