Its because they do that BS 150 point or whatever inspection of your car and knock off money for every ticky tac imperfection on the car, company is a rip off. Plus if you lease your car from there you have to remain in that car until your lease is up, you can swap cars if you find another one you like and switch the lease over and redo the paper work. Then they try to charge you an arm and a leg to "upgrade" your sound system or put in an alarm.

They did the inspection and he said basically it's gonna be crap because of upgraded wheels and exhaust. Stock car is what they pay more for. He said aftermarket wheels and stuff is a liability. If the wheel falls off or pops they can sue Carmax but if it's stock then Carmax will say go after the manufacturer.

So I said I have stock parts give me a price as in the car is stock (wheels and exhaust) they didn't know about headers and ecu tune. So they appraised it for 14k.

Later I did the Autotrader "Trade-In offer" and marked it as stock and I got 12,900 loool

What a joke!!

lol thats why I usually do private sell on my cars if I sell them, you'll get at least 2-4k more that what a dealership is willing to offer.

People cant complain about trade in prices because the dealership has to make some money to be honest because they have bills to pay too.

well if that was the case, then they could offer much more. too bad they're all about profits. their revenues are much much larger then their operating expenses. can't blame them, though. that's why they're the stealerships.

private sale is the way to go.

Word, you are better off selling privately. People are always buying cars so even if you have to hold out for a few months to sell it you might as well.

In Carmax's defense.. it's incredibly easy to buy from them and their cars are absolutely top notch examples. A lot of the cars people sell to them end up sent to auction which is probably why they offer so little.

I don't agree man. Paying bills is one thing but ripping people off is another.

CarMax pays a flat fee of 150 for any car a sales associate sells. 100 dollars extra if you sell warranty. 50 bucks if you get the guy to trade in their car. Take a customer on a test drive and get 10 bucks.

So if you do everything perfectly you get 310 bucks and now you just ripped off the guys who just traded in his car and bought a more expensive car and made atleast 6-8k profit.

Paying bills huh?

This info was 2 years ago when I was buying my car. I went to carmax to look around and that's when a sales associate told me might still be the same or a little higher.

150 car, 100 warranty, 50 tradein + 10 for testdrive. Simple as that.

Just do a search on their cars Matt. That's an image and they make you feel that way. Haggle Free..Worry Free bs that they go by.

Search for CarMax Lemon and see how many lemons they sold and all the crapped out vehicles they sold then next time you go to carmax you can tell them to shove the 150 point inspection up their ...

i agree, carmax is terrible. they should at least give the sales guy some more commission or something for selling the car if theyre going to rip you off that much.

i think the only reason they stay alive is, as one of my friends told me, people dont have to have any credit or anything to buy from carmax, all their financing is in house, so they pretty much just sell to anyone. So if all that interest theyre making isnt enough(which obviously its not), they go and rip these people off even more with the car price! and these are the kind of people who can least afford it! Terrible...

Carmax did offer me $13,5 for my c230 and I was honestly lucky to sell it for $14 privately. There were several times when i was wishing that I would have taken the deal before I eventually sold it. They do make it easy, and I think that they may offer a fair value when buying, however its obnoxiously transparent how much they mark these cars up.

I really don't get the issue. Carmax does exactly what every other dealer does. They pay you wholesale for your car. Other places that want you to trade in and give you "more" simply add that cost into the price and financing of your new car. Carmax makes a point of making them two transactions, instead of trying to hide it in the paperwork.

Of course you will always make more on your car if you sell it yourself. The difference between wholesale and the typical private sell price the market will bear. And general retail at a dealership will be a bit higher than that, because, after all the dealership is offering a one-stop shop for financing and such. That one-stop appeals to many car buyers, and also allows, in many cases the retail cost of the car to be clouded. Way too many people don't care what the car costs, only what their monthly payments will be.

The extras Carmax offers are a bunch of crap...but then again, no one has to buy them. They are there for the person that doesn't care what the car costs, only what their payment is.

I have no problem with how Carmax operates. Assuming that is how they are paid -- I have no reason to doubt it -- they get the same for selling a C63 as a Chevy Aveo. That works for me, there is no reason for them to try to push someone into a car that is more than they could afford. I have sure seen that done by a traditional dealership with people paid on a commission on the selling price of the car. As far as if the sales people "should" be paid more -- why? They know the setup when they go work there. End of story.

Carmax does happen to offer financing from more than their own in-house financing. Or at least they did when I bought an Accord from them a few years back. It actually was one of the lowest prices from any used car dealership I could find in the Atlanta area. Lower price, and lower mileage car than I could find in the month or so I was looking. They were set up for three places you could apply for online, however, their rate was (marginally) better.

Now, in my rant, I am going to move on to the Stock vehicle, compared to one with After-Market wheels, exhaust, audio systems, etc. This is just my opinion, but I agree with the Carmax stance here. The modifications devalue the car for me. I do not want to purchase a car in a non-stock configuration, at least in 99% of cases I could think of. The rims might not be my taste, although they look fine. The same case for the rest of changes that may be made.

Just my thoughts.

+1 to MW

Good point on the flat rate commission. Nothing worse then a retard car salesman trying to force a test drive on me in a car I in no way am interested in.

Agree with Mike. The one transaction I've been a part of with Carmax was excellent.
