Car having issues...

Yesterday on the way home my car was acting weird. Pulled over turned it off then restarted it and everything was fine. Got home and the car smelled kinda weird.

Today I got up and went to the store, now it has a really weird whine coming from the front of the car, it rattle a bit and smells funnny.

I uploaded a short youtube video. Any ideas? Think I can make it to the dealer or should I have it towed?

I listened to the sound. Sounds like something is touching the belt. Check the condition of the belt tensioner and idler pulley.

Remove the engine cover (front half), start the car and watch the belt and all the pullies. If you don't see anything obvious, then remove the belt and spin all the pullies by hand.

+1 also check the condition of the belt. Check if oil or any liquids are on the belt 2

Start with what pcy said

So far it looks like it could be a bushing, converter, or flywheel. If not it will need a rebuild that cost around $2200-2300

thats no bushing. a bearing perhaps. does it make the same noise driving under load? what about in park under load without tires spinning?

whatever it is *if* thats going on inside your transmission, that wouldnt be good.

That's a transmission noise? Even with the car in park?

torque converter and oil pump still have function in park..

but lol obviously still look at the darn belt.

I dropped it off at a local shop and they said I need a trans. Talked to a friend that works at a trans shop and from what I told him he said it may not need a trans, could be what I listed above.

If not the tranny will need to be rebuilt. Hard to believe at only 72K. Car has been trouble free up till this point, but I will be selling it if it's something major. Love the car, but **** that noise at this mileage.

The noise stays constant with the RPM of the engine. You can hear a rattle under the car as well.

EDIT: belt looks new still.

Sounds like crap - engine looks like crap - Pull all the covers off & the airbox off. Remove the garden from the engine compartment. It does not sound too expensive. Maybe seized idler pulley or something has got stuck in the Poly V belt etc. Seized aircon compressor.

Do you have a CEL? Does everything work? Get someone to check for codes.

With that much noise the source should be easy to identify.

Good luck!

Sorry - posts crossed - Why do they think it's transmission - What are the symptoms? Was the transmission serviced at 39K?

No CEL, everything works except it shifts funny at low speeds.

Why does the engine look like crap? Garden, lol, its a few leaves. Not sure where you live, but leaves have been falling like crazy here so even when I clean them out within a few days there are back. I drive my car A LOT, put 35K on it in 8 months.

Please check all your fluids in your car asap.. Check your power steering fluid. If you can check your atf fluid check that as well. It wouldn't hurt to check all the fluids of your car if you haven't already.

What do you mean by shifts funny? explain. Does it slip, or jerk, or hold gears too long???

Was the transmission serviced at 39K? Oil & filter change?

Off to bed - back on air tomorrow. Hope it's not the tranny. A 722.9 7G is a really expensive beast to do a full rebuild on.

Not sure if the tranny was serviced at 39K, I bought it with 43 on it. Fluid looked good at the time of purchase.

The shifts were a little hard or jerky.

I bet it has never been serviced. That would've been a lot less expensive than a 7G rebuild. And not at all the car's fault.

I still think it is something else.

As there is no dipstick tube there is no way you can say that the oil looked OK at purchase. The only way to check the fluid condition is to change it.

I've never heard a Benz transmission make a noise like that but there is always a first time.

The noise sounds more up front to me but recordings can be deceptive.

The 7G had numerous software flashes that fixed jerky changes. Mainly jerky downchanges.

Sounds like classic low (or worn out) power steering fluid to me, but then again, I haven't owned my C350 very long.

Start by checking the fluid level as others have said. Also, if the fluid looks really dark (like black) it may be worn out you may need to have it flushed and replaced with new fluid. My wife's Odyssey van made that same noise every time it got cold, even though the fluid was up to level. I replaced the fluid and the sound went away.
