K&N addresses MAF Myth

Honestly, I doubt that will change anyone's mind, either way. I think that everyone's pretty much decided on which side of the fence they sit already.

2006 C230 6 speed
I was thinking about picking up a few for my C230, had them in previous rides and had no trouble, but many people on this forum seem to be staying away from them. Do we have any here with the K&N installed? Thats the people i would like to hear from on the matter.

Most spectrophotometers can't distinguish the difference between silicone & silica - e.g. IR, AA, ICP etc. Any silicone found present was probably silica - i.e. dust that got through the filter onto the MAF.

Independence is highly overrated.
I agree with you - even if properly done, this will be seen as self-serving, so like I said, I doubt this will really convince anyone who isn't already drinking the K&N kool-aid. It does taste good, though!
CS - it's been discussed here quite often with everybody posting their results. If you look at the C32/C55 forum, there's currently a Green filter discussion that's near the top - I had a similar situation with my Green filter in November, which totally disintegrated like on the pics, and then threw off the MAF code.
I got a new MAF and a new K&N filter, and the car's been fine since.
But do a search on this subforum too, the subject has been discussed many times.

I think this issue is only an issue when the filters are re-oiled. From the factory they are fine, but most people don't follow the instructions when re-oiling them, and that's when the problems begin. If you let a service center do it for you, then thy will certainly do it wrong.

I try to clean my MAF every 10K miles or so, as it does get filled up
with oil. For better or worse, it's how the car is designed, it's an emission thing, not having your crankcase venting, and sucking it back into the intake.
On the M111 there a little hose that drains the oil off from the Crankcase breather hose and sucks it right back into the intake, as well as another hose that goes from the oil catch, which tend to fill up, and it also
feeds oil back through the intake, right through the intercooler etc.
It's a messy setup.
I had a ITC filter for a while since it was shown to give a 2 HP increase.
It uses STICKY oil that bungs up everything.
Needless to say, I'm back to paper filters.
If you want to increase flow, take out the MAF screen and gun sight.
I had a catch installed for a while but took it out when I got smogged last year. It would catch some of it but not all.
Main thing is, pull your MAF regularly and clean it.

I think they should have gone to an independent for the review as well. Not like it seems to matter, though. People already have their minds made up on this topic.

When I put in my K&N my car was running sick. It was pulling very hard. Now not anymore, is this because It was running leaner and now my MAF adjusted?
The screen removal is pretty cool. I might give that a try. Although it saved me when I shaved my baffles. When I shaved my baffles little pieces of plastic would collect on the screen now it's good so I might go ahead and remove it.

Yes - once you've removed the inlet nut & bolt protection screens. Make sure you don't drop anything down the inlet. It could get expensive quickly.

High Mileage K&N fan here. I have well over 150k miles run on a K&N for the m111 motor. I have three that I rotate every oil change. I do use the pink filter spray lightly though.

To be honest I didn't feel much. People say it should help but I didn't really notice anything. A CLK500 was getting dyno tuned, they used stock air box and SL55 air box and on a dyno dynamics it gained 5hp. It made a difference but don't know exactly how much since it's typical to see 1-3hp difference from each pull.

Maybe you can try swapping your airbox for a C32 airbox. I'm sure you'll gain something. My car starves up top as well. I have similar effects with my car but I believe this is because of the gears. Sometimes if I'm in the right gear the car will pull insane but then sometimes even though I hit the kickdown there is lag and it slowly accelerates and never downshifts...whack!!!
