I have an question about the ML350 motor

Sorry to post this here but this forum seem to have the most activity an knowledge. I have an 06 ML350 and I have noticed that this thing burns an quart of oil an month. Now this SUV has just had two small oil leaks fix two the tune of $3000 and a oil change. But still after an month of driving the check oil light has come back on. The dealership has put it on the oil consumption bulls***. Now guys do the C350 have this problem? Any info will help thanks

On M112 W163 engine, there is a known problem of seals around the intake/throttlebody are known to cause oil consumption. If you search on W163, you will find what I am talking about. I am not sure if that is relevant in your case.

Karo's car indeed used to consume a lot of oil & it was due to leaks. There has been the odd 350 that genuinely burn oil. I'll try & find Karo's thread for you. The whole saga is in there.

Once leaks are sorted. IMHO the only way to check if the engine is mechanically sound is to do a leakdown test. This will indicate if oil is getting past the rings or down valve guides etc.

Benz do a standardised oil consumption test. I think the test is OK - I question their analysis of the results as to what is normal.

also look in the R171 SLK forums, I believe some very early M272 equiped cars had oil consumption issues there as well.

If you have an early 2006 w/ M272 you may want to consider selling it.
See attachment.
There is a class action lawsuit filed for this.
Check facebook.

On my car they changed the PCV hose, oil breather and cam plugs. This helped the oil loss but it was still there. My warranty was running out so then I started looking around and felt oil. So I took it in again (this time to a different dealer) and they said the silicone wasn't correct and oil was leaking again from the cam plugs.

Attached are pics where I felt oil. It's at the rear of the engine on the drivers side. If you move your hand down there (where the circle cap looking thing is) you will feel the cam plugs.

Karo, thanks for posting those pictures. Which parts (in the diagram below) did they replace on your car?

Of course!!! I lurk a good bit, especially if it's on a topic that interests me. I did a lot of due dillegence before I bought my C350 and part of that was being comfortable about the durability and reliability of the new M272 engine and 7G tronic transmission.

M is doing great!!!! Been on so many business trips lately I haven't been able to drive it a whole lot. It's always a treat to take it out after driving a rental car for a couple days though. Makes me appreciate the performance and handling all over again!

Hey guys just an update. Spoke with the SA he stated that service tech said that my ML had burn up an quart an a half. This is since mid Jan when I had the oil and other work done. So now I am just waiting to hear back from them. Thanks

Hello all just an update. So get an call from my SA today. Come to find out that my ML Vin fall under the motors that were burning oil. Now SA advise me that since my vehicle has over 50,xxx on it that MB isn't responsible to cover this So they had to order an tool that dealership didn't have to test the motor to confirm this. So my question is how are they going to fix this? And should my warranty company have too pay for this? Or is this an recall? Thanks

Cale is having the exact same leak from the driver side cam plug. We noticed it had a leak when we put the headers on and traced it back to that particular plug. I'll let him know if he hasn't already got it sorted out

Oh! crap. You need local advice on this matter. I would go direct to MBUSA. Be polite but persistent and ask for help.

I have just helped a friend in SA with a W204 diesel that suffered early turbo failure - a brake pedal that went to the floor which the stealer said was NORMAL! & his car was dented on the hood by hail when at the dealer.

We forced an escalation to Germany - turbo has been replaced & Benz is flying a new braking system from Germany to SA including calipers - all FOC.
