Wow, I thought I was doing good w/ my highway mileage, but ive never seen over 29.5, but I didnt really pay attention until I went low and added bigger wheels/tires.

From experience over 10-years, I can tell you that using the A/C fulltime depletes at least 2 mpg (32-50 miles) from any tank avg.

Finally, I changed from the standard 205 width tires to 225s, and noticed mileage drop over 30K miles. The fatter tires look cooler, but that extra 1/2" of rubber contact created more rolling resistance for me. Once I went back to 205s, the mileage returned.
Never thought about the added rolling resistance or the AC. Time to drive w/ the AC on rest... love my wheels/tires too much to ditch them though :x

This thread has been educational - thanks fellas :P

One additional thought. It takes several minutes for the "rest" function to fully shut down the climate control. Make sure you have the control on "rest" before you turn off the engine. This ensures the system is on "rest" when you next start the car.

Set the window and sunroof as I noted earlier, and the temperature to 68 degrees and you will have a nice circulation of air. The outside air comes in the right rear window and swirls around the rear cabin, then forward pass your head and neck, then vents up through the tilted up sunroof.

Sad to say, it works so well, that eventually the current will pull down the headliner cloth over the right rear passenger area... cheap 2001-2003 Mercedes headliner! The mid model W203s have an improved headliner.

I love this forum. That explanation MBBOB put up about the method of using the windows and vents is the same stuff I obsess over, and when I tell my friends or wife about they look at me judgingly... very useful thread indeed.

One question: I have the 2005 230k, how do I go about putting the AC to "rest"? I have a AC button there on the lower dash, which has a LED that lights up when I push it, and turns off when I push it again... If the LED is off, does that mean the AC is "at rest"?

sorry to go , but I do need to chime in on the traffic comments. Although I have not driven in the Beltway I have driven quite a bit in major metropolitan areas throughout the country (LA, Seattle, Portland, SF, Dallas, San Antonio, St. Louis, Indianapolis to name a few...) and I would say that by far Seattle traffic is the most consistently aggravatingly terrible.

in the C230 (which is getting REALLY close to 100k miles), with only Chevron 91 in it with Techron Concentrate Plus added to it about twice a year, a fuel filter that was replaced at about 70k miles, 19" wheels with 235's up front and 265's in the rear, I generally get 16mpg in pure city driving. Combined city and highway, with me trying to get good gas mileage, I get about 25-27mpg (both statistics were from the on screen display).

During long trips, I can get about 400 miles on one tank.

The M5 on the other hand:

I no car about mpg in M5, car is simply(Ironically, weighs the same as the e39 M5)

I know, I have to keep telling myself that. I used to get ~10L / 100km yet had a better commute with less stop-go.

alright guys!! I take back everything i said about my mpgs! Today was my first long drive that was over 12 miles!! From start and to my desitation which was 45 miles away i averaged 28-31 mpg! I guess I never really let the car fully warmup to really get the mpg?

interesting thread. .i dont think i have ever had my fuel filter changed. and im at 88k. mpg has always been a problem. however, i blame it on the bigger wheels and all the audio upgraded equipment.

i guess over spring break, i'll get an indy to change the fuel filter and see if i get some improvement. then after, i will change the sparks and see if that leads to a further improvement.

will changing the wires help too?

Unless there is anything wrong with the existing ignition cables, I wouldn't replace them.

C240
I have a 2004 C-240 and the best I ever get was 30 MPG cruising at 70 mph. For most city driving around beltway, I get about 17-20 MPG.
