Unable to activate COMAND in MFD

I'm bringing my car in again on thursday for additional warranty service. Minor, just a door seal but they were out of stock when i took it in for my scheduled service 2 weeks ago. They are going to make another attempt at activating my nav in the MFD.

My SA says that he was watching the techs last time my car was in, and they were attempting to activate my nav system in the MFD. He says they know where the menu is, but my car would not accept the programming. He said that the computer would not let him switch the system to "present".

Has anybody got any insight into this? His explanation was that since my car didn't come with COMAND, the computer wont accept that as an option.

And I just noticed that my caller-ID doesn't work anymore after my last service ( i have the integrated V60). He wants to uninstall the COMAND system and reset the computer to what it was previous to the installation just to make sure everything is working OK. I'd rather they not do that and I'll just do without MFD for nav, but if anybody knows what needs to be done I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

My opinion is that your service monkey is lying. My service people had no trouble whatsoever in setting navigation to present in my car. Have your service advisor call Jason McKague at Tri-Star Imports (636) 458-6399 or fax Jason at (636) 458-6055.

Just had it done 30 mins ago with I'm watching...

They suppose to set my Comand to Present last week when I was in and they didn't....so I call up and SA asked me to drop by before 6pm, so I did.
I went in and SA call up the Shoptech. Shoptech shows up and I show him the owner's manuel that shows NAV should be on 3rd menu on the display...so he went back to shop and push out the DAS Star system.
He plug the cable into a socket next the hood opener and start program the Comand =Present. I also ask him to remove the NO Phone on the display, Celluerphone = NO Present. And finally Neatherlands setting, which is change from USA to Neatherlands.
Less than 3 mins, everything is done in front of me.
Anyway, it's easier than I thought and now I know which shoptech I need to turn to when it comes to DAS setting. :P
This guy is pretty cool and I basically show him the procedure I print it out from here and he said he never done all this before but he is glad I show him all this.

Tell your SA to spend his and their techs time in a better more efficient way and have him send the techs to a stardiagnose course...it sounds like they desperately need that course!

Yeah, I'm wary to let them mess around with my car anymore, and if they decide they want to uninstall the COMAND I am just going to pass on having them deal with this issue any more. I don't feel very confident having them mess with anything more than changing my oil now.

When I initially picked up my car after the service, I noticed that they charged me for activating the nav in the dash ($125), but it wasn't there in the MFD! Then, they took it back and tried it again but they said the original tech was gone for the day. Then they had to mess with it some more because they had somehow disabled *all* the steering wheel controls.

So Steve, would it be possible for the group to pitch in to buy you a stardiagnose laptop? Everything was working fine after your install until I let the dealership monkey with it...

Hi hphan,

I see you are also in the Bay Area -- Did you take your car to Autobahn Motors in Belmont? I took my car there to have them turn the instrument cluster on for my COMAND. They said they tried, but it wouldn't work -- because my COMAND was not a US COMAND. They claimed that their was some sort of incompatibility, and that they get to the right screens, but the software won't allow them to change it. They mentioned they knew my COMAND wasn't US because of the TV button -- how observant!

Anyways, if anyone knows of a dealer in the Bay Area that will turn it on, please let me know!!

Thanks,

Wayne

BS! There are quiet a number of Euro comands in US W210s that already have been "nav-screen-activated" by US dealerships...

Yeah, I took it to Autobahn. It's actually back there today and they said they are going to give it another shot. I wonder if the whole "software wont allow them to change it" is some sort of BS they have come up with to avoid dealing with warranty issues. I got pissed at my SA today when he was talking to me, and told him that if I designed a software system that way I would be fired. I kind of feel bad about it now. He seems like a nice guy, just clueless.

Hi hphan,

I suggest you to go to MB of SF to activate the COMAND in MFD.
I got mine change last December right after Steve installed it on my car. Tell to your SA that it will work, and very easy job.
Mine was done in only 5 minutes and they didn't even charge me for it.

The first time I tried to have mine activated the dealer here in NH said that the screen didn't exist on my car and was probable a feature that never made it to the US, I then took it to the manhattan dealership with a list of all the menues to go through to do it and they had no problem. You can find them easily on this board, try that they might figure it out then.

Well, once again, they said they could not activate the MFD. I even gave them the menus that I found on this MB

Control Units
-> Info. and comms.
-> ICM
-> Control Unit Adaptations
-> Version Coding
-> Optional Equipment

Is it possible that they have a version of stardiagnose that is not compatible? I give up... until Steve gets his laptop.

That's what Autobahn told me as well -- that their Star Diag software was incompatible. My SA stated they can get to the menu, but can not set it to present. He seemed sincere, but I really don't know. Perhaps Autobahn has a newer (or older) release of the software.

It's not a biggie for me, but sure would be nice to have it working.

Scorchie had the same problem last week (this week in fact) with his CLK55 and euro comand at Autobahn Motors...after a serious talk with his service advisor he managed to convince him of the fact that they CAN activate the nav screen...and guess what: they WERE able to activate it (after 2 or 3 days though)...

Mail him for autobahn details...
