WARNING re avoiding potential MAF demise
spoke w a seasoned Mercedes service tech and he STRONGLY suggested tyhat i remove my green air filters from my car. this applies to k/n users too. he said " in these engines, ?m272, we have seen many of MAFs destroyed by the oil that passes thru these filters and is deposited on the maf, EVEN if u routinely clean maf w maf cleaner . so, greens out and paper back in. FYI, mafs are expensive

Ah ha hahahaha!
This old arguement again?
Well, I tend to agree with you and ditched my
ITG filter long ago.
It used a special sticky oil that bunged up everything.
But a recent post and info on the KN site states that they are
CERTAIN that the oily filter aren't a problem.
In the case of my engine, it sucks oil like a pig
from the crankcase breather and coats the MAF,, drenches
the IC, and all piping and this with the paper filter.
Despite putting a gasket, and wrapping the OD of the
MAF to make a good seal on it, it collects oil, and it leaks
all around the MAF.
So yeah, regular cleaning is essential.
I worry that the oil is going to wick into the MAF connector, it's
coated with oil. Wish they made a pigtail for that.
Need to put my oil catch back in. Took it out for smog more than a year ago.
Not sure if having the pulley causes it to suck more oil, but boy does it.
I just changed my oil and left it a quart low to keep it from all getting sucked
into the intake.

Oh yes the age old question do oiled filters kill mafs lol
All I know is that my oem paper filters seem to do there job and my MAF as far as I know has 159k on it so they can't be hurting anything.

I refuse to get into this conversation! I refuse to once again state that it isn't the factory fresh K&N, Green, or whatever brand filter you choose's fault, but when people re-oil the filter and don't give it long enough to "air-out" before putting it back in their car. I will in no way mention that allowing a minimum wage monkey Jiffy Lube to oil your filters is insane, or that they can NOT give the filter adequate time for the excess chemicals to evaporate due to how quickly they have to get your car in and out.
I'm not going to contribute to this thread, or post any of those arguments. Wait, what's that Trey? I already did? $%^!

Yup, yet again.
I can say that I recall that any increase in flow is at the expense of letting
smaller particulate matter pass through ie DIRT, at least thats what ITG told me,
and it's the only non-stock filter PROVEN to give a HP increase of a
mere 2 HP on a pullied car by Buellwinkle soo soo long ago.
KN gave NO power increase, costs what like 50 bucks,
vs. paper at like 10 which is good for 20-30K miles between replacements.
When I had the ITG installed, they replaced the MAF twice, and
the recirculating air flap thingy got completely stuck.
Thankfully all under warranty, pulled the filter out when it went in for service, though the filter holder was full of sticky oil.
I got lucky eh?
If you want to increase your flow remove the MAF+ gun sight leave the plastic mesh and TB screen (or put in a coarser screen, the stock one is like a tea strainer huge obstruction!),
that WILL give you a power increase Guar-an-teed!
We already have CAI just need to increase flow. The filter aint where the backup is occurring.

I am on a few Jeep forums too, and the K&N vs. OEM air filter debate rages on. The general consensus is that the K&N style and other "cold air intake" styles are nothing more than an expensive "feel good" part and in some cases damaging. There are dyno test to back it up too. They allow particles thought the filter, and work no better than stock. Stick with the stock filter for best performance in my opinion.

For all the naysayers, I have a Coupe with 213k miles on it. Only been through one MAF and have ran a K&N for well over 150k miles.

Speaking purely about the Wranglers, the stock air delivery system provides more than enough air to feed a motor that is not highly modified so modifications is not necessary. As far as the actual K&N oiled filter goes, that has been proven to not provide the same protection that the stock filter can. Your experience may be different, but I am not willing to chance it.

I was just looking at advanced auto parts to get K&N filter on sale for $55 a pair.....I think I will stick with my stocks after reading 10 threads on this issue. Better safe than sorry-2-3HP is not worth it!!!!
