Issue with coolant. HELP PLEASE!!!!
Hey guys! I have a really weird issue. I would say for the past few weeks I have had a warning come up on my LCD in the instrument cluster. The message says to "coolant check level". I do a lot of highway driving but this message comes up almost everyday so I don't know if it has anything to do with all the highway miles I put on. Anyways, the car is not running hot, nor is the coolant level too high or low. What is the normal operating temp on everyone elses cars? My car usually stays around 80 or just a hair above 80. I just don't know what to do because the coolant is not too high or low. I'm just tired of seeing this damn warning. One more question. Can I get the coolant at any auto parts store or is this a MB specific coolant only? Replies are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks phi... I will check the coolant again so I hope that it is low and my eyes were playing tricks on me because the last time I looked, it looked fine. Thanks for the reply.

First of all, do you have the warning for the windshield washer fluid pop up as well?
If so, fill up the washer fluid. That usually gets rid of both warnings. Bad design by MB.

The needle should be above 80. Should be around 90 (this is not indicated, of course). A car running 80 would throw a P0128 like mine did when the thermostat failed.
The 05s don't have the bug that causes the windshield washer fluid level to cause a coolant warning.
Top the coolant up to the black part on the reservoir and you should be good.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Just to clarify, the only message I have is the coolant one. I have never had a windshield fluid message. And yes the car does stay steady at around 90 degrees while I'm driving. I will just go ahead and top the fluid up to the cap. Hopefully it takes the stupid message off. Thanks again.

Your car might be unlucky & have the old system - we don't know build date. Top up the screen washer & see if it effects the message.

Well I filled the coolant last night so I will see if the warning comes up. Thanks to everyone who shared their input.

Ok well I topped off the coolant and I have put about 80 miles on my SS230k and no coolant warning so I guess it was a little low.

what happens if you fill the coolant too high? i think i may have...my cousin told me it was ok to fill past the black mark and i now realize he may be wrong. the coolant level is now about a centimeter from the top of the opening...
also, why does his car say "coolant check level" when mine says "top up coolant" ?

Had the same message as well, topped off the windshield washer fluid and message still came on so I topped of the coolant with Zerex G-05 and has been fine since, been like a year too.

I got the coolant indicator last night and I think I'll change the wiper fluid first. Would it be best to drain out the old fluid first? If so, which would be the easiest way to do that? Or can i just fill it up with some new stuff?
If that's not the case, would I be fine driving the car with low coolant? Because if I order the Zerex, it won't come until tuesday.
And even if that's not the case, I'll be able to get the wiper sensor within a day also. Luckily my work is able to order all these parts/oem stuff/minor&major service parts(pretty much everything!) and get it within a day delivered.
If you're in SoCal and need some replacement parts/fluids delivered fast, let me know.

Just top up wiper fluid.
You are fine driving with a low coolant for a few days as long as there is plently of fluid visible in the surge tank.

I took a look at my coolant tank. It's the one with the white container to the left right? It's about half full. With a picture and saying do not open when the engine is hot.
For the windshield fluid. It's a long tube going down to the container at the bottom with a skinny black tube inside. How do I know when I top off the windshield fluid?
