Want to design a cold air intake

Waz up MB dudes,

I got my SLK manifold and elbow and just waiting to find an 82mm tb. In the meantime I was looking at a way to improve the airbox which then I decided to just create a cold air intake. I stumbled upon this (see last link) and I decided to build something similar (I believe the master Phi has a similar design too).

Cone filter mod: Lately couple of members (if not more) have been doing the cone filter mod. IMO this mod would work and it definitely would add power. The reason behind my belief is the M272 airbox is pretty restrictive and now you are freeing those restrictions. The only downside to cone mod would be the hot air. I also believe the stock airbox does also get very hot as well. You would really need a tune to adjusts for the more airflow (you will still make some power but not it's full potential).

Recently a member named Marco did the manifold and tb mod on his 2.5 (without a tune-he is going for a tune soon) and he felt improvements immediately. So my verdict is, a better designed manifold + a bigger throttle body + better airbox (maybe an SL55 airbox or a custom airbox or ever an intake setup) + tune = great power.

I want to get some input on the type of setup you would choose.

Custom intake (similar to this)

Edit
I think with the setup I mentioned plus headers (of course the Kleemann knock offs lol) you should not spend more than 2k and should see (i really believe this number) 60hp gain.

Very cool, I'm still waiting to see Phi's intake setup with the NACA ducts. I'd never personally cut up my hood, but we'll see what his looks like when he's done.

I'm chopping my hood this weekend, I was going to do it it last week but had family come in from out of town. Leaving for out of town till friday so it'll be hacking time saturday. Only thing I need to do is swing by a muffler shop and have them make a T pipe from the MAF to the dual pipes. The Y pipe I got sits a little too high and rubs the hood. So by my calculations the T pipe shouldnt sit more than 6" tall from the MAF. Other than that everything is good to go finally. Hopefully it'll go smooth and it'll give me time to lift up my car and rip apart my wheels so I can repaint them.

Karo,

Have a look at what needs wings has designed for the m112. I know its a different motor, but the overall design has been proven to make plenty of power on the XF/R170 v6 platforms and the layout is very similar to the m272. The only difference is, that you cant place the filter infront of the radiator like they do on the XF/R170.

Id be interested to see where this goes as I have been wanting to build my own intake forever. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the input guys. Thanks TruTaing, I'll take a look

I can't wait to see your hood Phi. Are you also upgrading the manifold as well?

eesjuning, cmon man think positive

I truly believe with the manifold and 82mm tb and better intake system atleast 40hp can be gained. Add the headers and a tune to go with all that and I think great power can be made.

Yea I think I'll use my 100 coupon and buy the manifold. If I don't go that route I was seeing if cale could give me his stock manifold and see if I could port it out and find a way to deactivate the butterfly. Honda preludes had something similar with a butterfly for their manifold in the H22a4 motors and there was a way to reroute a vacuum line to disable it.

in order to use the stock manifold you would have to fill the short stage runners since their are two runners cast into our manifolds. I would imagine it may work not sure if their may be a detriment since air will be going through two routes at the same time instead of being rerouted at a certain rpm.

It's hard to explain without actually seeing how they have it setup. Also the butterflies cover over 50% of the intake once they kick in for the second stage of the intake runners. that would explain the growl at 4k but difficulty pulling at higher rpm basically choking the engine for more air.

Just by chance did this Marco have a thread on the intake swap to his 2.5?

Sorry no. I don't have a thread detailing the install and parts required since this mod was not my original idea and I didn't spend the man hours researching if it would work. There is a thread over at Mbjunkies and you can chime in and get in touch with the guy who started it all.

Thanks to Cale the mod was made possible. We are currently in the process in getting a tune sorted out.

Marco, I heard you headed for a tune on Monday. I have clients to see tomorrow but I might go back for a retune (not for the manifold or tb, just a retune). I'm also thinking of mixing up some toluene (if I can find any) to bump up my octane to around 93 and running a bit more advanced. Tomorrow is Cerritos meet, try to make it. Let me know what time you go Monday

sorry mang i realized i sounded a bit smug in my reply.

but in any case if you have any questions feel free to ask. Also here are the oem part numbers for the items.

2731410325 82mm t/b comes from e550,s550 and gl550 models

2721403001 single intake runner manifold comes from an 09 slk 280 and 350
easily distinguished as being a black polymer manifold. this item has
lately been back ordered here in the US. i was able to get alocal dealer
to special order the item for me, took about a month to get in.

2731400118 the maf elbow that mates up to the new larger t/b

happy hunting

hey karo yeah planning to go this coming monday for the tune. Jeremy tells me may take the majority of the day. i'm hoping it won't take that long wife has to go to work at 4pm and i have no baby sitter until 8pm.

debating about taking the baby with me. If i can't work something out i may have to reschedule for the following week.

once i speak with jeremy in the morning and figure out a time frame since traffic will definitely suck after 2 pm i'll let you know what time i'll be there.

i'll try to make the meet before i go to work. depends on what time i'll wake up. this heat is making it awfully hard to sleep in the morning after work.

touluene. try a paint store i believe it's the same as paint thinner.

Keep me updated bro, also we get to cerritos around 9PM. I tried couple of local paint stores and supposedly it's the main ingredient in cooking meth so it's been recently hard to come by. Don't know how true this is but I might have to hit up couple of construction buddies.

Heard it's cheaper to bump with octane with that vs ms109

Yo Snacks! The tune took a while for me when I was getting tuned with Jeremy. Well mostly because after the tune my car would shut off and i would have to restart it again. Getting this problem fixed took him a while =(

karo* I'm looking into building one myself as well but still working on the design of how I'm going to build it. I just don't want to cut my hood like phi to put the CF airducts. too chicken!

How many hours do you think it took trying to figure a ball park amount of time.

If I get there at 9 hopefully we would be done by 1pm ish
