See the diagram above. Check the breather line that goes all the way from the drivers side tank up to the filler neck.

Im going to drop in a new fuel filter. Which I'm fairly certain wont fix the problem.

Next I will look at the breather. What is the process for checking that hose? I dont see any easy access to it to blow some air through it. Is there any or easy way to gain access to the hose and filler neck? From the diagram (and the way the car is built) it looks like you need pull the whole tank out. Is that the case?

-thanks again

New fuel filter didnt help. Now back to checking the breather on top of the tank. Can I get some guidance on how to get to this hose? Do you need to remove the whole tank?

Only way is to drop the tank. I suspect your fuel pump.

check your fuel delivery that returns to the tank, you can test it where it comes out the fuel filter just connect a loose pipe into a bottle start the car and let it idle, you should see a litre in 30-40 sec. if its way below that renew the fuel pump

Glynn, Thanks for the Removal WIS, I had shoulder surgery last week so wotn be attempting this for a few more. Is there a torque for the drive shaft bolts or possibly a second WIS? The single sentence "Remove rear axle" makes it seem way too easy.

Again thanks, this will be a huge help to me when I do it.

E240 , A class and V class
hi i have a friend who has a W203 C240 ,yr 2001,the car ran totally out of fuel the other day and it showed "MULFUCTION" , he filled up , and drove for two days , "MULFUNCTION" showed up for these 2 days , third day the car wouldnt start , he replaced the fuel filter with a new one , still wont start , the mechanic tested the fuel pressure and he says its very low . Now am wondering what happened , did the fuel pump die , if so what killed it , can an empty fuel tank kill the pump and how many pumps are in the tank ? i have just read that there is two compartments in the tank , what pumps fuel from the non pump side to the pump side ?
