need help diagnosing possible faulty torque converter

When im driving slow and my foot is lightly on the gas it feels as if the car shifts into 3rd or 4th gear when it should be in 1st which causes the car to jerk and lose almost all of its power but as soon as i give it more gas it hesitates for a second and seems like it goes back into the gear it belongs in and picks right up. somebody told me it was a bad torque converter but im really not trying to spend all that money if its just a bad sensor or something. the gears still shift smoothly and this does not happen when i give it alot of gas to begin with. any suggestions on what this could be? the car isnt giving me any warning lights either.

What mileage. When last did the transmission have a fluid & filter change?

As Russell says - scan for stored codes. OBDII scanner that reads transmission codes would be good enough for a start. Star would be better.
