Yes, there's a charcoal-colored tarp that you can close after closing the sunroof. As is par for the course with a Benz, the rollers are prone to failure.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
This is one thing that made me go gaga for the coupe.
That, and when he folded down the seats.
A glass roof I had only seen in cars such as the one off
Maserati Boomerang.
And then there was the SUPERCHARGED 2.3L something right out of a lotus!

I get complacent, riding in my benz.
Doesn't seem so special, I mean I drive it every day.
But the other day i rode in a co-workers Toyota Echo,
and I remembered how special she is. Yuk! I forgot what means,
"basic transportation"! The attitude of "I just need something to get me from here to there".
Next time we're taking my car (to lunch!)

I almost always have the shade open and light streaming in from above,
when I don't have the sunroof open!

I so rarely use mine, typically if I have a headache or something or don't feel well.

Yeah, I just close mine in wintertime. Otherwise, with the windows closed, and the stereo at a normal level, I hear all of the squeaks and such that the roof generates.

Knock on wood, yet 9 years later and mine have no signs of issue and are used regularly. I just spray the hell of out everything that moves in the roof and shade with silicon and lithium grease once a year after wiping everything down to remove the dirt buildup from the previous year.

I often close the shade when it rains to block out the noise, and it rains a lot here.

Proper lubrication will fix that.
Mine doesn't make a sound.
Use 303 protectant on the rubber, that fixes most of it.

And stick on felt along the edges of the trim on the hatch.
