BLOCK HEATER INSTALLATION ON AN M271 BLOCK

WHAT IS THE TRICK IN REMOVING THE OEM HEX HEADED PLUG TO INSTALL THE FACTORY BLOCK HEATER. IT LOOKS LIKE A 22MM SOCKET IS THE CORRECT FIT, BUT THE PLUG WON'T BUDGE. DO YOU HAVE TO HEAT THE PLUG WITH A MAPP TORCH TO LOOSEN THE SEALANT? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Didn't think I would get any input on this. From what I see on this forum it appears that there aren't too many hands on members. Looks like most members fix or modify thier cars with their wallets.

Not true - plenty of DIY'ers here. Very few have block heaters or ordered their cars with them new. A few Canadian members have retrofitted them without issue. Presume you are trying to remove the correct plug?

To get the plug out you need to get enough leverage on it to break the freeze. Both heating or a sharp clout on a power bar will help.

I would say over 50% of members on here live in areas that do not need block heaters. I can't think of too many US cities that support it either by providing public outlets to plug into.

I live in Canada (Toronto) and don't have a block heater or have ever needed one. However if you happen to live in Edmonton or Winnipeg where it is often colder than -25*c then one is needed.

It seems that with synthetic oil, cold cranking is much easier as the oil is not like tar

ok, where is the hex head bolt located? is it the oil drain plug?
i changed my oil last summer, the dealer only sucks it out with a vacc. as most people do. it took a cheater bar for xtrs leaverage. it was frozen on. i used a pendatrating oil to help to loosen it. but still took the cheater bar. the plug must not have been taken off - ever. while i was ther i used a new plug with a magnet. the book calls for a copper plug, why - i do not know.
