Whaddya think of this??

OK, my 230 is two weeks old. Wednesday I brought it in for some (I thought) minor stuff, including the crappy radio reception problem I've had from day one. They gave me a nice black E320 (with only 1200 miles on it and told me it would be a couple of days because they have to do the tint over (it had some bubbles). Yesterday I get a call telling me that the antenna is defective and it needs to be replaced; that it wasn't the tint interfering with the radio. OK. Today I get a call: the whole back window has to be replaced because of the antenna. I didn't get ALL the details (I know, I know, I'll call tomorrow), but it had something to do with the antenna attaching to the top of the window or something. Has anybody ELSE had this happen to them? What do you guys think? I am freaked about having a new window put on my new car Oh, and I will ask about the antenna amplifier (in the previous thread about radio reception). Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I had the same problem. My problem was the my radio reception went all staticy when i turned the rear defroster on. I got a new rear window and they replaced all the electronics such as the amp and antenna's..... it took them close to 2 weeks to repair this coz they kept forgetting to get some part from germany....

after they did that, i had no problems. I tinted the car after this problem was taken care of and i have had no problems so far...

At least you got a nice car to drive. That does seem a little odd but at least the problem was fixed

The radio antenna is not attached to the rear window in any way. You should ask your dealer why they are replacing it.

I don't know about your Benz, but my Coupe's radio antenna is in the rear glass. It looks similar to the rear defogger matrix, but it's up higher on the window and is split into two distinct zones...

The W203 C-Class does NOT have an external (whip) antenna as earlier MBs. The antenna is applied to the underside of the rear window.

Mine was delivered at the same dealer you got yours back in July '01 and I have had no issues with the antenna reception.
However, my window tint was not done by the dealer.

It's a shame isn't it that hardly anyone can do a decent job of replacing front or rear glass. I had to have a major glass company do my previous Passat 2 times to get it right. Besides positioning the glass incorrectly, they got the glue all over the interior of the A-pillar and had to clean it off. They also said they do M-B sublets "all the time" . From this and other experiences, I will avoid having a windshield replaced if it can be repaired, at least until I'm ready to sell the car.

In fact, after reading an older thread, I've discovered that my '02 C240 suffers from the rear-defrost FM interference problem, but I'm seriously thinking of just letting it go. I think I'd rather live w/ the occasional static (how many times do you use the rear defrost for more than a few minutes) than take a chance w/ the rear window replacement, not to mention tearing apart the headliner, etc.

Toyota Tacoma & Lexus IS250
my C320 occasionally has the same problem with the defogger...(and sometimes without it) - but I too am afraid to have the dealer fart with it.

Unless it gets worse, I'll let it go for now.

I feel your paind but at least your driving a loaner benz!

I've been driving a Chevy Malibu for a week now because of the same problem. When I took the car in the first time, I gave them a print out directly from the MB Service Alert that was posted on this forum, and told them what the problem was and how to fix it. They tried to just replace the radio amp and when that did'nt work started ordering the parts to replace the rear back window. Now I have to take the car back again when more parts come in.

Note to Rick and MrBob -

Yeah you guys are right about the antenna. A salesman know-it-all had me convinced the antenna was hidden in the bumper.
I checked and you are right.
