Actually, MB makes a lot of money on trucks here in the US too. Most Americans are not aware that Freightliner is owned by Daimler Benz. Freightliner is one of the most popular heavy duty and medium duty trucks on the road here (US and Canada). Freightliner also builds some bus chassis'.

MB currently sells no trucks under their own name in the US, other than the Sprinter.

No 2009's but a 2006/7 at AUD 65,000 for 25,000Km = US$ 64,737.33 = ZAR 539,150.21

Your prices are as bad as ours if not worse. In Aus all cars not manufactured there are certainly as expensive as SA. Your locally manufactured Holden, Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi?(are they still there. They were threatening to leave when I lived in Sydney) are very reasonable but are protected by Govt. When I was relocated to Aus I was not pleased at Benz prices. So I bought a new Holden Berlina 3.8 & pocketed half of my car allowance.

EDIT - What is the price of a new E350 Coupe well spec'ed in Aus right now?

OK - I saved you the trouble.

It's AUD 141,445.66 on the road base price in NSW - not much spec choice

In SA it is AUD 100,000 on the road in Cape Town reasonably spec'ed

Nothing yet Phil. My enquiries to Steve on the other thread were for a full Parktronic retrofit kit for another car I had found with ultra low mileage. I reply to Johnand earlier in this thread - he was part of the conspiracy.

BTW - while looking to buy another car I drove a C250 Coupe. I think it is really nice and the engine feels more perky to drive than it's specs would suggest.

Glyn -

That CLK is absolutely gorgeous. I have always loved CLKs, and these later ones in particular!

The E Coupe doesn't have the classic lines that I love about this CLK. Fantastic choice!

ah, I just saw that reply. wow, that is an insane price. glad you got full Parktronic on the 209.

yeah, the C250 came in on Friday and I drove it around this weekend as I haven't driven it in two months and when pushed, it was surprisingly quick, while being a lot more gas friendly and comfortable than my other cars, lol.

Awesome pick up Glyn! The car looks mint...not to mention all the bells and whistles.

The late model CLK's look terrific. I was admiring one at my work parking lot just this morning and I log on and see this..LOL.

Im guessing a thorough detail and wax job is #1 on the list?

Thanks mac - I agree - I'm having a bit of trouble settling into the new Benz chiselled looks. I'm a boring old traditionalist I'm afraid.

Ha! You did not pocket anything. You bought HiFi gear. We all saw the pictures! Proper sound reproduction is as important as a good road car.

LOVE the C250 coupe... even the C180. In 3 years time... I'll be seriously looking into one. Unless the E coupe comes down in price, I'm already seeing 2010 models for $80,000 pre-owned in Australia... for Australia, thats not a bad price.

I gotta say I love the new designs... I really do. More-so than the w203/w209 era of cars. Don't get me wrong, the designs we own are fantastic, yet there is something about the w204 and new E-class coupe. But I'd still rather have a w203 with all the upgrades than a w204 classic... wait, I do . I was considering a w204 classic but I liked the w203 I bought much better.

I could have bought something like this;

But for $4000 less, I bought this... even if the above was the same price, I still like my W203 better.

Now if this was the same price... I would be driving it:

Anon - many people do. I'm the one out of step. The W204 would have been my obvious upgrade in facelifted 2012 Elegance form & new. To me the car has lost some of the true Benz values of solidity, quietness & luxury. It does not feel like a Benz to me. More like a BMW 3 Series.

The New E Class however, still has all those attributes & more apart from styling. It is great to drive. To me the only way the E Class styling works is on the Cabriolet with the top down. That looks great/OK depending on angle. These pics flatter it.

Your used prices seem to drop a little quicker in Aus. I think that luxury car tax imposed is very soon discounted.

The front end of that E Coupe is the worst bit for me. It's not bad otherwise. I'd still take a CLK over it though. I'd feel guilty otherwise. It's possible in 5 years we will see the E Coupe in a new light after it being around all those years, but I haven't warmed to it yet. CLK still classic to me.

However, both the CLK & E Coupe really win over the C Coupe because of that pillar-less design, when the windows are down. I love that. It's beautiful.

Glyn - do you think that Paint Armor thing you mentioned getting is legitimate and beneficial? I've always brushed it off because I clay, polish, and wax my cars regularly anyway. You think it's particularly good? Are you getting it done annually or something? Thanks for the advice.

mac - Benz nearly did the long life stuff standard but were put off by the on-cost in an industry where saving a few cents = profit.

I can only talk for Auto Armor. My C240 was done new. It has never been polished in 8 years. The clearcoat is absolutely perfect - not a swirl in sight. No bird poo or anything has ever damaged it. Water still pebbles on the car. Had I kept her I would have had a reapplication done.

The paint companies like Spies Hecker, Glasurit, PPG etc. & the detailing industry never agree for obvious reasons. The paint companies have an attitude that you should not do anything that microscratches the skin of the clearcoat. Most polishes have a cutting agent in them that microscratches the surface & then fills them in with wax, polymers, silicone etc. If you strip those off with a solvent you have a microscratched surface left behind.

All I can report is what works for me at the coast & with many birds around. It's worked for me on many cars & costs a whole US$ 100 to have it done here. Everytime I take my car for service & demand a body inspection - want same out as it went in - the dealer is amazed at how perfect my paint is.

Clay Bar is a US thing. In ROW nobody knows what it is. I do, but lived in the US for many years.
