if you take your finger and block the light, you can kind of notice the subtle differences that tiny little bulb makes.

Oh well, guess that theory had went down the drain.

As far as I remember, the light underneath the rear view mirror did not come on our cars right away. AFAIK, I believe it wasn't until the mid redesign of our cars (2004.5 MY).
It does give a nice ambient glow at night. Mine actually died a few years back. A member here made a nice one for me that was an LED versus the OEM incandescent one. It's a little bit brighter, and gives a much nicer glow than OEM. My sig has his mbworld name.
Audi's and VW's also have these lights....but theirs are red and in the ovehead console instead of underneath the rear view mirror.

The bulb is an incandescant bulb with an amber "condom" on it to give it some color. It's there to provide some ambient light. Yes it does come on as long as the key is in position 2.
The bulb can and will burn out. Here's my thread for some more info.

A lot of cars have this. Honda cars all have it now, the BMW has a red one, the Lexus a white one, my Benz seems to be red but I can't remember haven't driven it in a week now.. 125k miles and 7 years and it hasn't burned out yet.

Eric,
Yes...still going strong and working as good as it did when I got it from you and installed it. Great workmanship you did making that LED light for me. I tend to show it off to people whenever I take them out in my car at night. The LED will last far longer than the OEM incandescent bulb.

Take the old one out and see if autozone has something like it.
Or buy pre-wired 12V LEDs from ebay (something like 10 leds for 3-4 bucks) and it's just plug and play, the resistor is already there.
