I'd just play with one at your local Joisey showroom and see if you can tell that it's the same convoluted mechanism. Hopefully, they're not, and it's a simpler affair, but knowing MB, I'd be surprised if they improved it.
Have you checked the W204 forum? I'm sure that someone there has outlined the procedure for removing and reinstalling one.

ok new plan, I found a w212 manual shift knob from a different seller in Germany. I have found a lot of aftermarket knobs that say they will fit w203 and w212 so I think it should fit without a problem.
