Question Dash reprogramming for Comand unit retrofit by Steve

Hello All,
I was wondering if there are any SF/Bay area owners who had their dashs reprogrammed for the Comand unit locally? I'm scheduled to have a unit installed in July, and am trying to find a dealer that would be able to activate the dash function. Also, what do I tell the service department when I bring it in? Any help would be most appreciated.
TIA

Has any just tried to tell the service advisor that their comand functions don't appear in the MFD and let them be like "oh that's weird, we'll take a look"?

If a car without COMAND has the MFD enabled for Nav will it just say something like "NAV NOT PRESENT" like the phone screen does? If this is the case I would get it switched before the COMAND install so everything will work on day 1.

Nice idea, but I'm guessing that they'll tell me that its because I don't have a Comand unit. I like a suggestion that a poster used; "I gave someone a jump this morning and the dash comand won't come back on" I'm tempted to try this one!
Thanks for your suggestion.

I actually went to 'MBenz of SF right' after Steve installed my Comand to have the Navi works on the dash cluster. I did say that I gave jump start to my friend's car before it happened. I knew one of the Advisor, his name is Andrew, very nice guy, likes to modify his car too. Thus, we share a common interest. Then he introduced me to one of his service man who's going to star diag my car. He told the guy to do whatever I wanted to do, but he also told me that everything I asked him to do, he would not responsible for it. I agreed. When that guy is goin to activate my Navi on my dash, I also asked him to activate my TV tuner option, and also disabled the interlocks. All of them free of charge. Thanks to my very kind advisor.

are you saying that after Steve installs the Comand Nav system, the buttons on the steering column won't work or the Nav can't be displayed under the Speedometer?

no what he is saying is that once you fit a comand in a car which had no comand, everything works fine (your display on the speedometer and your gps in your Comand) EXCEPT that you won't have the navigation menu available to you in your speedo display which you currently don't have anyway. To get that additional feature, you need to drive to your dealer and get the DISPLAY reprogrammed.

The instrument cluster is able to scraoll through different menus...menu's that are not used are switched off from factory. The navigation meno and phone menu therefore are switched off in car's without those features and have to be switched on (activated) by MB...that was basically what was said...

NAV display in Instrument Cluster

My MB Dealer activated the Comand with StarDiag and everything functions from the instruments and steering wheel except the NAV. The dealer says that the NAV functions only display in the screen not the IC. I called MBUSA and they said that NAV functions will not display in the IC. WHAT IS THE RIGHT SCOOP?

COMAND Display in IC

Richard,
I believe that the COMAND unit should have a IC (MFD) menu available when activated by the dealer. The IC menu shows distance to next turn, graphic turn scale/indicator, street name, etc. Actually, it shows the same info as the dash unit when the "MIX" setting is selected. If you scroll thru MFD menus and no "Navi Ready" comes up, then I think that it has not been activated.

Best of luck,

Steve
ps: MBenzNL, Any info on BiXenons for the Coupes? Take care Steve!

BS!!! Next time you speak to either MBUSA or your dealer, tell them to send their techs to usefull courses...
The comand functions from the steering wheel and with the instrument cluster immediately after installation without the dealer doing anything...activating the nav menu in the IC is just a matter of telling the IC that the car has navigation (10 minutes max with stardiagnose).

Next time your dealer comes up with this BS, show them this picture of a W202...every single MF instrument cluster (00+) has a nav menu that can be activated (just like the phone and tele aid features that can be (de)activated).
