Oil Change C240 2003

Do I have to pump the oil out or can I do it the old fashioned way and drain it out of the oil drain plug. Also how much oil is it going to take 8.5 qrts?

I have the All Wheel Drive and have been noticing a weird noise when I back up and turn the wheel from the rear of the car. It stops as soon as the car is moving straight without the wheels turned. It is hard to put into words what it sounds like but almost like a rubbing or a grinding noise? The car has 72k miles on it and just wondering if anyone might know what the heck it might be.

Thanks,
Case

Case, you can certainly drain from the drain plug in the oil pan. i still prefer that way.

You may want to check the fluid level in your power sterring pump. they can make a bit of noise when turning. Even slightly low and they will howl a bit. you will want to use the specified fluid in your owners manual. Good luck on it.

Thanks glocati, I will certainly check that out. What is weird is that it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the vehicle but no doubt I will take your advice and check the fluid level.

make sure your ebrake is not dragging

jack up the rear end with the ebrake OFF and try spinning the wheels by hand, also take a look at everything in the rear wheel area

you could also check the diff fluid level/condition of fluid make SURE you can open the fill plug BEFORE removing the drain plug!!!

Case..forgot to mention that the m112 V6 takes 7.9 quarts/US of motor oil.

m112 paired with 4-matic takes 7.4. Not sure of why the 4 matics take half a quart less...

very wise words.

knowing that you MUST open the fill plug can also give a nice rush of adrenaline, making that job slightly easier

If you take out the drain plug, you must replace it, or it will leak. There is a micro-encapsulated sealant on the threads of the plug that is consumed when installed.

Ah, that is very good to know. So I need to replace the whole drain plug and not just a washer correct?

You are referring to the differential drain plug and not the oil drain plug correct? All of the sudden I got confused (which is not hard for me to do lol).

Thanks for all the help guys. I changed the oil today with no problems at all. The power steering fluid was a bit low so that might have been the reason it was making the noise while backing up and turning the wheel. Thanks glocati.
