Weird noise: No one can find it!
My mother has a C230 kompressor sedan and there is a weird clanking noise as she describes that is intermittent in the rear end of the car. MBZ and back-yard mechanics alike cannot find the noise. Nothing appears warn or loose, the jack is secure, but still the car makes the noise on occasion... I've never heard it when I drive it but I don't drive it that often since she is in another state and only see her 3 or 4 times per year... Any guesses? Like I say, everything underneath and obvious checks come up clean.

JC

Possibly from the fuel level senders.. normal, mine are noisy and always have been. Several other members point to the same thing. As far as I know, no one has ever been able to solve it.

BTW, she says it is very loud and "clanky" and others outside the car can hear it and get concerned... Are they this loud??

Thanks! Is there any certain level of gasoline in the tank when it occurs most often? Or, on grades, level, or heavy, light acceleration or anything where it happens the most?

I wouldn't describe it as a clank. To me that implies metal-on-metal. This is more of a something heavy banging around inside the trunk noise. But one persons clank is another persons knock is another persons pop.. that's the problem with the descriptions.

Thanks guys... If it is the fuel level senders, is there no fix or is it not cost effective? Estimates? And, LilBen, are you also pretty sure this is the problem?

If it is not the fuel senders then check
All rear suspension bushings.
Sway bar bushings.
rear axle shaft CV joints
broken spring - common
Shock absorbers/dampers
Exhaust hangers.
Heat shields.
Rear propshaft flex disc.

I am sure this is the problem with mine, yes. To my knowledge there is no fix.. and even if there was, I'd not spend money on it. It's of no consequence.

I had my lower rear shock bolt work itself loose and caused the odd clank, was hard to find since the lower rear arms have a plastic cover that hides the bolt.
I also had my upper rear shock nut come loose. This would cause the shock to bounce inside the cabin. Was pretty easy to find when I lowered the rear seats. The noise was obviously coming from inside the car, although it could be heard outside the car too.
