Is it time for my timing chain to be replaced? I have 95,000 miles on the car.

I would do it at 100,000 as preventative. Do it immediately if it rattles at start up.. note you have to listen with the door open.

If you or a professional know what they're looking for, there's generally no real reason to replace it, unless you know there's some looseness there.

No need to borrow trouble with these cars, imho.

Tommy, I'd agree with that if the C230 has a M111. However, if he has an M271 C230K it's worth it for peace of mind. It doesn't cost that much to replace it, but it costs 50%+ the car's whole value if it goes wrong.

Makes sense to me. My chain has already arrived, tensioner is on its way. No symptoms @ 135,000 but I'm still replacing it.

Ah ha!! The old reliable M111 wins again. You're making this too easy for me.

Do these cars still have value?

If the timing chain needs to be replace, does the rattle happen after the car starts? I know the rattle is only couple of seconds. I have a rattle (chain like) when the key is turned to the 2nd setting. The 02 C230k coupe has passed the 120k mi mark. I will probably change the timing chain just for peace of mind. Otherwise if I have the problem now, I will get a rental car and order the parts tomorrow. I drive 110 miles 6X a week.

Yes ~ after the car starts. Only for M271 - Your car should have the M111 engine which rattles anyway. M111 chains don't usually jump but maybe better safe than sorry.
