Restraint System Service

Just got this error message SRS - Restraint System Service. I am also within 900 miles of my service B. Related?

I did a bunch of searching for SRS malfunctions... seems as if it could either be a seatbelt wiring problem, a spiral horn sensor problem or ????

Has anyone changed out the spiral horn sensor? If so, is this a relatively easy DIY? Any instructions out there? I couldn't find any...

I'd like to narrow the problem down as best as I can, before pouring money into this...

I just found this DIY on the "other" benz site. Does this sound correct to replace that spring?
"This DIY is easy as heck. Most biggest moment of apprehension was when I reconnected the Negative battery terminal and hoping it wouldn't fry my SAM.

2 T30X torx to remove airbag, 1 10mm allen bolt to remove steering wheel. Then three small philips screws to remove old clockspring. Pop off steering wheel angle sensor, put it on new one, then install in reverse order.

The clockspring is just a ribbon spiral. The old one broke due to fatigue and possibly poor alignment since it appeared crimped in a few areas and snapped in one area.

all I need to do now is get to a shop to get the SRS light turned off and i'm back in action."
So, the SRS system is unable to "self-heal" after the spring has been replaced?

What about those "go to the workshop" error messages related to the SRS malfunction... my error message does not say that.

My understanding is that SRS codes are unique in that they have to be cleared with a computer, and not by disconnecting the battery.

You'd have to figure out what is causing the error or the code will just show up again after you get it cleared. Good luck.

I think you can clear it by unhooking the battery. I am surprised it doesn't clear itself, I thought it reset each time the car was started.

But that's jumping to conclusions on what the problem is.

Wait your car just says "SRS Restraint System Service"? Not "SRS Malfunction Visit Workshop"? Never seen that before.

you cannot clear it by removing the battery...

Alright then, I stand corrected. I have had only 1 SRS error on my 05 and it cleared with a restart. But it was a malfunction that advised to "visit workshop".

Correct, the message actually says, "SRS Restraint System Service" verbatim... not the visit workshop message. Its odd, because I haven't "touched" anything yet... all indications are that the system is working fine... turn signals, ESP, buttons on the steering wheel, Airbag light comes on, goes out when no one is sitting in the passenger seat... I looked up under the passenger seats, and confirmed all connections are well seated... its just odd.

Yep, the light is on... but I haven't seen any "visit workshop" messages...
Here is a picture of the warning lights and message.

bump - does anyone think this is tied with the Service B event or maybe passing a mileage milestone?

Anyone have a break down on messages and what they mean?

If anything, I want to be fully versed in "what ifs" before visting the stealership... it is so RARE for me to visit one, and I just want to make sure no one tries to pull the wool over my eyes.

It most definitely does not have to do with any Service A or B items. This message is mentioned nowhere in the manual. Interesting.

Let us know if you can figure it out.

nothing to figure, SRS lamp will only switch off after faults have been cleared with diagnostic tool.

Any idea why it wouldn't say "malfunction" like it says it should in the manual? This error is not described there at all.
