Do I have day time running lights? I thought no Mercedes had them. Just city lights which are for cities in Europe where you are not suppose to have headlights on. This applies to countries in Asia too.

There's a "constant" headlight function selectable via the "settings" menu. With non-Xenon lights, I believe the headlights are always on at reduced power to act as DRLs. For Xenons, they cannot be "dimmed", so they will be on all the time. I have Xenons, and have chosen not to use the "constant" mode.

I think they are a safety feature

but I dont use them. I believe they are better on than not but, they burn out too many bulbs for me and I gave up on them with my last car. I would go through a headlight on each side a year. Cars where I didnt have them went for 3 yrs or better on each bulb. I have not had any accidents with either car but certainly a car with them is more visible than one without. Use the settings to turn them on and off.

I just remove the fuse.

In previous cars I just remove the fuse to disconnect the DRLs. Most cars never make it over 25,000 miles if the headlights are used. My '99 Corvette did have a nice low-slung look with the yellow lights burning but did look like a Camaro from a distance and attracted the wrong(COPs) kind of attention.

If your a defensive driver you really don't need them. But if you like the look of fog lights(sure, I do!) or want others to see you while your occupied with XM Radio or on the phone leave them on and I be sure to stay out your way. :P

I believe in DRLs. Use them all the time on all cars. Have been using Philips VisionPlus H7 on my S70GLT and now C Coupe for nearly 2 years overall.

Have had 2 burnouts, 1 on each side during this time. Which is not bad, especially concidering that I would have replaced the bulbs anyway - the filament gets thinner over time which results in reduced light output. This is an inherent feature of all halogen bulbs, so my reccomendation would be to change them every 1-1.5 years no matter what. And, in light of this, DRL doesn't add to the upkeeping cost that much, if at all.

From a bikers point of view they are very dangerous. It used to be the only vehicles that had their lights on during the day were motorcycles. This was a safety advantage for them. If everyone has lights on then there's no advantage, you won't stand out anymore, not that most people pay much attention. For example, before we had OHV/carpool lanes I would split lanes, some cars would see you coming and feel obligated to keep you from passing (many CA drivers, drive to kill). I then would have to hit about 40-50 mph while they are moving 10-20 to be fast enough so they can't react in time. If they can't see me coming at a diference of about 30 mph with my high beams on (always ride with hi beams on) then the lights have little affect.

Like CHMSLs (Center High Mounted Stop Lamps) on the rear desk, the uniqueness of DRL's wears off once a significant number of folks start using them. It no longer gets my attention, and I am surprised the "Greens" haven't lobbied to get them removed as a waste of resources.

I enabled the DRL on my coupe, so now it requires no effort. Is it really safer, I don't know, but it can't hurt.

Canadian model cars have to have DRL. The dealer won't turn off the feature. Its federal law, When travel in the USA, other drivers flash there lights to warn you to turn off the lights.

Buellwinkle, regarding lights and bikes, that's why I put a headlight modulator in mine. THAT really gets the "cager's" attention.

DRL are *deadly* for motorcycles. Should be abandoned as soon as possible.

I am really surprised by people telling here they like to drive with their foglights on. I've you do it in Europe, the police will stop and fine you. Approaching somebody on the highway with your foglights one is an act of traffic agression, as if you are trying to force people of the road. It sure p*sses me off!

On the other hand, radar detecors are olso forbidden. :p

Don't use them, don't like them. No specific reason, just my preference.

I use the fog lights when it's foggy. Isn't that what they're for?

Is the city lights = parking lights? (the side bumper and rear lights?)

I thought I read the code that it's illegal to have the parking lights on only.

DRL

Safety research in Sweden and Canada has shown that DRLs are indeed a safety feature. I would not begrudge replacing the odd $20 H7 bulb on a $25-30K car, in exchange for the safety benefit.
