C200 CDI rattling noise

hi all,
i have a strange rattling noise in my 2006 c200 CDi. it appears only over 2200 rpm. when accelerating, it appears right before the gear changes and above 2000 rpm aproximately - sounds like a quick "tr-tr-tr-tr-tr-tr-tr". when cruising on the highway, it can be heard when reaching about 2200 rpm and up. someone told me it's the timing chain tensioner or something with the timing, but in my opinion, if it was the timing itself he car was suppose to not run smoothly and smoke - which is not. is it possible that the tensioner is making it?

tnx!

I would have thought that if it was a timing chain fault the rattle would be there at most speeds.

Can you replicate the sound above 2200 rpm at standstill with the bonnet open ?. You may be able to pick where it is coming from with a stethescope or steel screwdriver to the ear.

I would not be driving it too far until diagnosed.in case the timing chain skips & catastrophically destroys the engine.

Good luck.

i've been driving like this for the last year and a half. mechanichs told me that it's not something to worry about, but they don't know for sure, so the other option is to start changing everything which will cost me a lot of money.

furthermore, today i've changed the tensioner which indeed was "tired". the problem improved in about 30-40 percenet but the noise is still there. i'm thinking maybee it's a bad injector. is it possible?

Did you change the timing chain tensioner or the serpentine belt tensioner?

You could remove the serpentine belt whist at standstill & run the engine to see whether the noise is coming from any of the pulley or idle pulley bearings .You should also pick any noisy ones with a stethescope.

I have always had a chain /sprocket chatter from the front top on my engine since new, especially when cold. There is no way I can hear it inside the cab when driving.

If you can hear your engine clatter at 2200 RPM on the open road at speed then you have a huge noisy problem which you should attend to asap.

You don't say what year model the car is & how many KM the car has done?

the timing chain tensioner. when the engine is cold there is no sound - it work beautifly. on high speed you barely can hear it, only if you really try to listen hard. the car is a 2006 with 230K miles

That's a fairly high mileage. I would suggest at 230,000 miles that the cam chain would have stretched to some degree & the sprockets would show some wear. This in my opinion could be causing your noise.Fitting the new timing chain tensioner probably took up a little more slack & helped quieten the chain.

I was wondering whether you could use a slightly heavier grade oil which is still within the MB diesel specs ie 229.51.This may quieten the engine a little.

The safest bet would be renew the timing chain & check the sprocket wear.If the chain goes its .....curtains.

The trouble is that worn, stretched chains wear the sprockets and guides at an abnormal rate. Worn sprockets will then wear a new chain. I recommend a new chain & guides with careful evaluation of sprockets.
