E-Bay Smartkeys
Which part of it is laser cut? The metal part? I think you've been watching too much "Gone in 60 seconds".
yea, I did watched "gone in 60 seconds" like 10 times.
yeah, the metal part. Isn't that what they are called tho? That's what BMW calls the metal part too.
The laser cut keys are the older ones that swing out like VWs. Our are IR.

we still have the metal key that is basically the same as those flip keys.
A customer at my dealer usually gets a new ML and new SL every year. For each car, he always orders two extra keys, for a total of four. But when he trades the cars back in after a year, the two extras are usually still sealed in the same bag from the parts department when he ordered them. But at least he's not losing them.
I wonder if the dealer has a special box just for his extra keys that he never picked up?
THe ML key and a BMW key for that matter look very different then the Valet key for our cars. They have what is an untouched piece of metal going down the middle. While the valet keys for our cars are a standard cut key.

There are 8 keys possible per car, and for whatever technical (not policy) reason, they can't recreate a previous key. I can't remember the details as to why.
There are 8 different SmartKeys available for your car, along with three duplicates of each key, for a grand total of 24 different possible keys. Once all 24 keys have been used, you will need a new Electronic Ignition Switch. I have yet to see a customer go through all 24 keys. When your car is new, it is supplied with Keys number One, Two, and Three. One and Two are the main keys, Three is the emergency "valet" key.
The old valet key was a slimmer version of the regular smart key that was also missing the metal portion. I guess MB quit using them since it was a bit of a pain in the *** to carry around such a big valet key.

They only got rid of these in 2002, so I would not say it is an outdated comment. They just got rid of an extra key that many people never use.
Actually, the valet key does have the metal key. The only thing it is missing that allows it to be thinner is the lock and unlock buttons.
OK. I'd only ever seen a picture, maybe the one I saw someone pulled the metal part out. Is the valet supposed to leave the car unlocked or something? Or is it if you lock the car with the metal key the alarm isn't activiated?

Frank as a point, our valet keys are the same style as the older "laser cut" keys. While I'm not sure if they are actually cut with a laser (looks like a lathe to me), this is the same style.
