I guess they could be laser cut, but I don't see why they would have to be. They should be able to be cut the same way all other keys are.

The laser cut keys are the older ones that swing out like VWs. Our are IR.

Frank as a point, our valet keys are the same style as the older "laser cut" keys. While I'm not sure if they are actually cut with a laser (looks like a lathe to me), this is the same style.

I wonder if the dealer has a special box just for his extra keys that he never picked up?

THe ML key and a BMW key for that matter look very different then the Valet key for our cars. They have what is an untouched piece of metal going down the middle. While the valet keys for our cars are a standard cut key.

I don't know about yours, but my valet key (I'm assuming you're talking about the metal key inside of the key fob) is not a standard cut key. I can't say if it's laser cut, but it looks a lot like the one in your picture.

Mine does not have that verticle piece of metal along the ridges.

No, he picks them up. But he never uses them. So when he trades in the car, they are still in the same bag as when he picked them up.

There are 8 different SmartKeys available for your car, along with three duplicates of each key, for a grand total of 24 different possible keys. Once all 24 keys have been used, you will need a new Electronic Ignition Switch. I have yet to see a customer go through all 24 keys. When your car is new, it is supplied with Keys number One, Two, and Three. One and Two are the main keys, Three is the emergency "valet" key.
Of course, for the 2002+ models the car only comes with two keys.

That seems like an out dated comment, possible reffering to the old keys sseing how none of us that I know of got a third emergency Valet key, the only valet keys that I know of a 203 owner getting are those that are part of their smart key and that can only be used to lock/unlock the doors trunk and glove box.

Although the part about the valet key is outdated, the rest is still valid. Mercedes still uses the same ignition system, the FBS3 (Fahrberechtigungssystem 3, which means "Driver authorization system - third generation").

The old valet key was a slimmer version of the regular smart key that was also missing the metal portion. I guess MB quit using them since it was a bit of a pain in the *** to carry around such a big valet key.

Actually, the valet key does have the metal key. The only thing it is missing that allows it to be thinner is the lock and unlock buttons.

They only got rid of these in 2002, so I would not say it is an outdated comment. They just got rid of an extra key that many people never use.

OK. I'd only ever seen a picture, maybe the one I saw someone pulled the metal part out. Is the valet supposed to leave the car unlocked or something? Or is it if you lock the car with the metal key the alarm isn't activiated?

If you lock it with the metal key, the alarm is not activated. But you're not supposed to give the valet the metal key anyway, because then they can get into your trunk and glove box. I think the skinny key is really for use as a wallet key or something like that. You can give a valet your smartkey without the metal key. Just lock the glove box and trunk manually with the metal key and then they can't get in.

True they are not laser cut but are CNC machined.
