Question Annoying "seat belt" beeps

Hey guys, I just bought an '03 C240...my first Mercedes. I always wear my seatbelt, but I like to start the car, adjust the temp and radio and stuff before I put it on. The car beeps very loud at me for little while when I start the car without my seatbelt on. Is there a way that you guys know of to turn that beeping off?
Thanks for the help!

Well you could just buckle the belt.

You could trick the car into thinking the seat belt was being used. There is probably a switch in the seat belt connector with wires coming out. Should'nt be more than either shorting two wires or making them always open depending on how it normally works.

The beep has been around on MB's as long as I can remember.

Every car beeps or buzzes as well as flashing a lght in the instrument cluster. There is no way to legally disable this as it is part of the safety system and required in some states to pass inspection. This also is usually the same system as the key in the ignition and the door is open beep as well as your headlights being on beep. The only solution is to ignore it or buckle the belt. Instead of finding a way to disable a safety system.

I say put a switch on the seat belt clip thing then you can disable or enable the beeping due to seat belt not in without affecting the beeping ofr other reasons (key in, lights on, etc.)

Have an inspection then just throw the switch back to the normal setting. I find the beeping anoying at times. I don't think I'd forget to put the seat belt on if it didn't beep.

Suggestions:

1) Make a false clip that you can keep in the seat belt buckle. When you want to use your seatbelt, just take it out and store it in the middle compartment.

2) Find the speaker that transmits the beeping sound and cut the wire(s) to it.

3) Before entering the car, reach in and buckle the seat belt. Then sit on top of it. Start the car, do adjustments, and then exit the car, undo the seatbelt, get back in and buckle up.

4) Leave car running... always.

5) Before turning on car, turn radio volume up to the level which drowns out the seatbelt beeping.

you forgot that you could also getan identical beeper that is making the beeps exactly 180 degrees out of phase from the original to cancel each other out.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I am going to start trying all of them until I find the one that works best. I as expecting the easiest to be designing an out of phase beeper.

This beeping is unique to north american cars. The european (and preumably other locations as well) cars DO NOT DO THIS!

When I had my car in Germany one of the first things my friend Dirk (an engineer for a Bosch subsidiary) noticed as the annoying beeping. No european cars do this.

There must be a way to turn this off.

Just food for thought...when my dad's 99 ML had to have its' entire instrument cluster replaced because the computer wasn't talking to the dealers computer (strange), they swaped it out for a 02+ cluster. After that day, we noticed the seatbelt beeping "feature". Annoyed the hell out of us when we started the car.

I mentioned this to our service advisor next time we were in and when we got the car back, it didn't beep no more

maybe ask your service advisor?

I haven't noticed this beep ever on any benz from '94 and up except when we got the instrument cluster swapped out...

Rev, you forgot the all important #6

6) Open all your windows so that the neighbors will all hear the beep too. That way you're not the only one that gets pissed off at the 'beep beep beep beep beep' sound.

lol lol

Yeah, I agree - how bad can a 4 sec. reminder be? I get more pissed at the alarm clock in the morning

ours didn't beep for just 3-4 seconds. After u reach about 15 mph, it starts beeping if you don't have your seatbelt on and the beeping stays on, doesn't shut off. NOW that's annoying

I'm sure it could be turned off in the Star Diag...you could beg your dealer to turn it off when you take the car in for Service A. Just tell him it causes you to have a seizure or something!!
